Good day at work today

Hi 

For those who don't know I work with teens in 'alternative education' (i.e. the school doesn't want them on the premises any more - so we get them in a community centre. I'm not a teacher - I'm a youth worker and basic skills tutor)

Last Autumn the group applied for money to make a film about young people and alcohol. They procured the funding and employed an actor from a locally based theatre company to help them make a DVD.  He worked with them doing improvisations, script writing, story boarding, rehearsing, acting and filming and then he went away to edit the DVD.

Today we got the finished product and it's brilliant! The kids are so proud of it and deservedly so. It looks really professional and they all look like professional actors. They've done themselves proud. They learnt a lot too. They learnt how much time and effort had to be put in to get a whole 20 minutes of finished product!!

Now they are going to make a 'resource pack' to go with the film so that if it is shown to other youngsters in other community centres the pack can be used along with the DVD as a basis for discussion. (Underage drinking is a big problem here)

We've had a few bad days at work recently - but today was a good one!

Woohoo . . . good for the kids!!  I'm sure it made all the kids stand a little taller seeing how well the DVD turned out.

It's always refreshing when your work day goes well.  =)

Very cool - and important work too. I would say that 85 - 90% of the guys I work with in prison are in there because of alcohol or drug addiction primarily. Just recognizing it's a problem is a big part of the battle won. Congrats to your kids for their project.
