Anybody belong to Consumers Reports?

Hi - does anyone have a membership with Consumer Reports?  Or, does anyone have "Consumer Reports Best Buys For 2009 Buying Guide"?

Our range has been smelling of gas when we light the oven for the last few weeks.   :o  By the time we would pay to have someone come out and look at it, parts to fix it, blah, blah, blah it would be smarter money wise to just go ahead and buy a new range as ours is 19 years old.  With that said, I have never bought a range before (this one was here when I married hubby).  Anybody have any recommendations? I looked at some the other day - soooo many to pick from.   ::)  The salesperson said we should keep with the same brand of appliance as the other things we have in our kitchen . . . do you guys do that?  Our refrigerator and dishwasher are both Maytag brand.  Our current range is a Tappan - which I've been very happy with.  Don't EVEN know if they make these any more.

I did notice when I was looking at ranges the other day that now most brands have enclosed burners versus the open ones my current range has.  Closed burners seem to be nice.  I've noticed some have a center grill . . not sure if I would like that or not.    All I want is your basic range - four burners and an oven.   ;D  However, if it has some added features, that's okay too.  I've also noticed that a lot of the ranges now have gone "digital" versus having knobs you turn like mine has now.  Wouldn't it be nice to just go into the showroom and say, here is what I've got, I want one just like it.  LOL

Any ideas appreciated - the sooner, the better as we are probably going out "looking" on Tuesday when hubby is off work.  If anyone has a Consumer Reports book I'd like to talk to you too.   :D

Thanks,
Bucky

Sorry on both counts, Bucky.  I let my subscription run out last year, and I have all electric appliances.

Hopefully someone with an active subscription will be able to help soon.

Well, I will sound off if you are looking for electric(here by us in florida, gas not in our area) Get a flat top range, I find it cooks so much better that the older versions...also get a self cleaning oven, well worth it!! Just my opinions....

Hi Bucky,
I have a new Whirlpool stove and I love it.  It has the flat surface top (electric) and a huge oven.  Both regular and convection oven, also self cleaning.

I've had all Whirlpool kitchen appliances for over 50 yrs. and haven't had a problem with any of them.  Also my washer/dryer are Whirlpool.  (We started with Sears, but they were made by Whirlpool)

Just a very satisfied customer.  ;D

Update - A friend gave me the info for Consumer Reports, which I didn't see until AFTER we had already gone out looking and purchased our new range.  The good news is the range we picked was #2 Best Buy on Consumer Reports.   ;D  Delivery and setup is this next Wednesday.  Yay!!

Thanks Salsen for the link to Consumersearch.com - I noted that for future use.

Wahoo Bucky!  Congrats on the new purchase, and I hope that you have years of wonderful cooking with it.  It does cook meals all by it's self, right?  ;) ;D
