Visiting London

Arrived in London on Tuesday, July 14.  My bother and sister-in-law have been here for three years and are going back to the states at the beginning of August.  I finally just booked a flight to visit since it was now or never.  I am here alone, without any of the kids or the husband.

Visit is going extremely well.  London is great.  Spent the first two days on the big blue and big red busses seeing London.  I will probably not get out of the area but there is so much to see that even spending all week in London I will probably not see everything.  Love everything about the visit so far.  The tube is great.  I could just ride all day and not come up.  (Probably not a good thought for those of you that depend on the tube for transportation but it is so novel for me.)  Am trying to see as much as I can and I am taking some pictures.  Not as many as photog husband would take but just some memories.  Loved Harrods.  Just wondered around the food sections in amazement.

Have not walked so much in well over six months.  Hope I will not pay for it as the week goes by.  I am struck by how international London is.  The people and the shops and restaurants represent just about every nationality.  Now that I am here wish hubby was here to share it but he was not able to come and I did not want to pass this up.

Roxanne, it's great that you took this golden opportunity to see England.  To many of us, what you are enjoying now, is only a dream.  Savor every moment.   Remember to take lots of pictures.  Also keep a diary of your activities if you can.  This will help you when you think back on the adventure you are now living.  Have a wonderful time

   Hi Roxanne, welcome to England, especially to our wonderful capital city.

      I love London, but I live a long way from it , in the north Of England.

   It has it's draw backs like most cities, but I was in awe of the fantastic buildings, and the amazing history of the city.


    Yes Harrods is usually the first shop on the list , with Fortnam & Mason being a popular second. The markets,  such as Covent Gardens are fantastic too!

Welcome to Britain!  I live in Brighton, on the south coast an hour from London on the train.  London is a really exciting city, as you're discovering.  There are so many places to visit.  Have you been to Trafalgar Square?  There's a new 'art work' on the spare plinth by the statues.  Ordinary people have applied to spend an hour high on the plinth doing anything meaningful to them such as talking about their favourite charity, or doing crafts.  Go and have a look.  There's also a wonderful free gallery nearby - the National Gallery - with lots of familiar and famous paintings.  Dolly's right - Covent Garden is a fun area to explore with many little shops, street theatre and lots to see.

I used to work in the West End of London in my twenties... I suppose like most people who live near they do not appreciate it.  I havent really been back there for years although I would love to spend a night seeing a show and having dinner and then back to a swish hotel!!!

My son went on the London Eye last week which is a must-do tourist thing, plus a river boat up the Thames!

I am sending a daily log home.  I have seen everything that the big bus covers.  The performance art on top of the monument changes daily and I have gotten some pics.  As an American it is just awe inspiring to see the diverse architecture that London represents and the building that stood before our country was America.  I lived here as a young child (11 or so) for three years on a base in Harrogate.  Last night my brother and his friend took me on a pub crawl.  Don't drink much but it was next to the Thames and the views and the night life were an experience.  They want to take me to see We Will Rock You featuring Queen music tonight or Sat night.  Without frequent flier miles and a place to stay, I would not have done this.  Roxanne
