Ulcers from NSAIDs?

Has anyone ever developed an ulcer from being on NSAIDs long term?  I am starting to feel miserable again with my reflux after switching my medicine on doctor's orders.  Now I am wondering if it could be a stomach ulcer.  I have been on Naprosyn for five years now.   I called my doctor and am waiting for a call back.

Liz,  It is possible that the meds are causing you stomach problems.  My doc puts me on Protonix (a PPI) to help prevent any damage caused by my meds.  You may want to inquire about that.

I think any of those kind of meds can cause a ulcer,, then again who knows what we shove into our mouths is doing to our stomachs

Ulcers of the stomach are one of the most common side effects of any of the NASAIDS. People are told to watch for black stools which can mean bleeding high up in the GI tract. Also, can have bright red stools if the drugs irritates the colon further down the tract. I saw a woman with vaginal bleeding that turned out to be from the NASAID.

NASAIDS should always be taken with food---I don't think that milk is enough. Need crackers or something else along with the mild to protect the stomach lining. NASAIDS are not to be taken with aspirin or Prednisone either.

Sometimes a doc will order the baby aspirin for people as a preventative but I would always ask questions about this. Aspirin is extremely irritating to the stomach and can cause stomach bleeding really easily. Always check with docs about any drugs that are taken with Prednisone as there are a few that can cause stomach upset and should at least not be given at the same time as the Prednisone. Just depends on the individual. Irish ;D

Hi  :)

I was taken off NSAIDs as soon as they discovered esophagitis. I've been told I'm not to take them any more. End of story.   :(   Was put on Tramadol and paracetamol instead. I miss the Naproxen but I know my GP won't give it to me again.

Take care - Scottie  :)
