Just started taking amitriptyline and have read on a few sites that you shouldnt if you are on the pill - worried now!!!!

Does anyone take the pill whilst on amitriptyline?  I dont want any "accidents"!!!

Hi fluffie,

Have you spoken to your pharmacist about it?  Or your doctor maybe?  They would be the first place I'd start asking questions.

Take care and let us know what he says -

Doctors are shut until Monday (unless emergencies) so will ask then... just wondering if anyone knew on here in the meantime!

Hi Fluffie

Think it might depend on what type of oral contraceptive you take. I've had a look in the British National Formulary and it says:
Oestrogens: antidepressant effects of tricyclics antagonised by oestrogens (but side effects of tricyclics possibly increased due to increased plasma concentration).

My interpretation - and I'm no medic - would suggest that the oestrogen affects the antidep effects of amitriptyline. It doesnt say that the effectiveness of the oestrogen would be reduced. I suppose it could be different if you are taking a combined pill. If you tell me the name of the one you are taking, I will try to find some info for you.

Thank you - thats very kind of you - all this medicine stuff is new to me!!! I am using the Microgynon contraceptive pill.

Can't see anything that suggests the amitriptyline will interact with the Microgynon, but I would check with a medical prof as soon as you can.
