Make 2 appoitments,, one for the thyroid problem,, and the other to a (GOOD),,, rheummy,,he or she can steer you in the right direction for the dry mouth and eyes along with the other problems you mentioned

Hi Jas

Navydad is absolutely right.  You need to get the thyroid issues addressed but you also need a good rheumy, preferably one who knows something about SjS.  Where do you live?  Maybe someone here lives near you and can recommend a rheumy nearby.

Thyroid issues are weird.  You would not believe the things that your thyroid can make go wrong with your body.  The thyroid affects your eyes in a number of ways (more common w/ hyper, but it definitely happens w/ hypo--especially when its autoimmune, as with Hashimoto's), and it also affects your throat (often leading to feelings of dry mouth/scratchy throat).  See your GP or endo, get on synthroid or levoxyl (NOT a no name generic--no matter what anyone tells you, they just aren't reliable), and see how you feel in a few weeks.  If your eyes and mouth are still bothering you, then you might want to pursue other avenues.  It's possible to have Sjogren's without having SS-A or SS-B antibodies, but it's also possible that you don't have it.  I'd try working on one thing at a time so that you know what works.

Good luck and best wishes!

Hi Jas  :)

I developed Hashimoto's thyroiditis (underactive) before I ever got an SjS dx.  In fact it was my endocrinologist that suspected SjS and referred me to a rheumy. SjS doesn't really make me feel ill - just darned uncomfortable. My thyroid made me feel really ill for some considerable time, until it was identified as the problem, dealt with and medicated.

You may find that thyroid replacement meds make a world of difference to how you feel. See an endocrinologist as soon as possible.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Jas,

I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis and perfect blood work otherwise but my extreme dry mouth and eyes were not ignored by my rheumatologist.  She said I have secondary Sjogrens and the antibodies do not always show.   Persist until you get a better answer and some help with your symptoms.  I"ve found teaching hospitals like CCF are very thorough.
