Hi all,

Been on Plaquenil for a couple of weeks, and have had a line of 3 small and very dark bruises appear on the inside of my thigh just above my knee.  I just woke up with them...

I am about 99% sure that I have not bumped it, certainly not hard enough to remember... Something about them just doesn't look right...

Could this be a side affect of Plaquenil?

Thanks

  Hi Leah,
I like many elderly bruise easily, I am not on any of the SS drugs, apart from Naprosan,( intermittenly)

You don't say how old you are, and I do think that SS can also cause slight bruising. Funny that you posted this today as only yestrday

I tried a pair of M&S tights on ,  I had a little bother putting them on and wondered if I should have bought a bigger size,  they started itching my inner thighs, and after a couple of hours I went to take them off and inner thighs were black & blue..

I can't say if it was the tights or what, but it did give me a little scare...
It's a weird howdy doo!!   Dolly

Hi Dolly, thanks for your reply, I am only 33 so hoping it's not old age - tho feel 80 many days!!!

Thinking about it, I am also taking naprosyn, and started it around same time as plaquenil, so maybe that's the answer!

Sounds like you had a bit if a struggle with those tights! Normally the marks ones are so good too...

Take care ,

Hi Leah... I'm 33 too btw  ;D

I know bruising can be related to a blood thing.  Low blood counts can cause this so it may be something you need to bring to your doc.  I'm not sure if Plaquenil lowers blood counts or not.  I know since I'm on Methotrexate I have to keep an eye on this because it can lower my blood counts.  My doc said that bruising commonly happens when you are on immunosuppressants.

If this is something new though, I would definitely bring it up to your doc, if anything during your next appt (if that is soon).

Sorry Leah, I should have noticed that you are a Junior member..  (age thing)    Your just a babe!

Debab is right tho'  you need to sort this if it is a new symptom..  seeing as you have only just started on Plaquenil..

Hi, i've been on Placqunil for 6 months now and have not experienced any bruising at all but your body could be dealing with it differently. I would sure call the doc or pharmacist and ask oif this could be a possible side effect! Do you think you were possible scrathing in your sleep? Hope it's better soon and i hope it's not the Placqunil as it has helped me a lot!
Good luck and let us know what you find out. Take care!

I am 54 yrs old.  (Am I considered elderly????)   :-\   I have been on Plaquenil for about 1 1/2 yrs.  The last few months I have had bruises appear on my legs and arms. Sometimes I look like I've been abused.   Right now I have five between my wrist and my elbow on my right arm.  Haven't hit anything.  Glad you posted this.  I will talk to my rhuemy on 17th at my appt. and see if it could be any of my meds.

If you find out anything, please post back.

You're not alone!

No jpd54, you are not elderly! To me anyway! I guess it depends oin what people thinks is elderly, hahaha. I'm 56 and still consider myself to be quite young. I think you also should talk to your rheumy. I've heard scars can turn black after being on the Plaqunil. That's scary!!!!

I haven't had bruising from plaquenil, but I did have terrible bruises on my thighs when I was using Advair (a corticosteroid) back when my doc thought my lung issues were asthma.

Hi Leah  :)

Are you using NSAIDs for pain? I had to stop them because of unexplained bruising. The Plaquenil has never caused me any bruising but the NSAIDs apparently did. The bruises were quite alarming.

I'm now on Tramadol and paracetamol as opposed to Naproxen or Diclofenac.  I liked Naproxen but have been told its a no no.

Take care - Scottie  :)

I've been on Plaquenil for a little over 4 years and have had no trouble with bruising.  My rheumatologist gave me Tramadol for pain.  Be careful with the Naprosen, Advil and the such, they are very hard on the kidneys.  My aunt ended up on dialysis because of over use of those meds.

Leah,
I learned this week that fish oil has a natural blood thinner.  I'm going to stop taking it for now to see whether bruising improves.   If bruising is a side effect of Plaquenil, I am not aware of it.

Leah,  I asked the same question a couple days ago,  My 4 year old Jenna started plaquinil about a month ago,  She also started brusing, they are little pinpoint brusises and some petichia,  I wonder the same thing as they are in weird places, that I know she didnt get bumped.  Maybe we should do some research lol.   Hugs and Kissess  Jonnell and Jenna

I take Naproxen twice a day along with my Plaquenil.  Since this was posted, I have tried to research the side effects.  The articles seem to say that both of them can cause bruising.  I  know there is something else you can take beside Naproxen, but is there anything other than Plaquenil????   I've had to wear longer sleeves to keep all the bruises from showing.  I guess I will tell rhuemy on 17th and see if she can tell which one is causing it.

Hi guys,

The plot thickens!! So it looks like it could be the naproxen or the plaquenil!  I really hope it's not the naproxen - it's been pretty good at reducing my pain levels...

Saying that I hope it's not the plaquenil either, because although I have not seen any benefits yet, I seem to have tolerated it very well, so hoping the benefits will start in a couple of months - don't want to stop it prematurely...

Anyway, I have taken your advice and booked an appt with my GP to discuss.  Thank you, all of you for taking time to reply to me...
