Kidney pain......?

Good morning all (evening for some of you or night =) )

I have been having some pain in my mid back on the right side about where my kidney is . I had some problems about 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my son, but nothing sense. Now every now and again I get pain in that area. One time it was bad enough that I had a horrible hot flash and felt that I was going to pass out and throw up. That feeling went away fairly quickly, but it was scary. I don't have voiding problems. I did add this to my symptom book that I am keeping when I go to the rheumy for the 1st time in July. I'm just wondering if I should do sooner- like go to my GP? I drink lots of water, coffee in the morning and sometimes a pop in the afternoon. Any ideas or input would be super appreciated. I'm 35 and still trying to get it all figured out. Is this kidney being affected or something else?

Hi Leslie 

I think that you should go to your GP about this. Go prepeared and take a urine sample with you. You could have a kidney infection or something so you really want to nip it in the bud.

OK, this has been one of THE most confusing problems I have had! The other one is my ear. It could be an infection so you should check that out, I have had that pain and ignored it and it turned out to be a raging infection, and I have raced to the Dr and it was either just SJS making my kidney dry or it was Interstitial Cystitis which is also caused when SJS attacks your bladder lining.
IC can cause pain (the urologist says) "from the nipple to the knee" b/c the mining of your bladder and tubes can be inflamed and it is SO painful!.
The ear thing is it is either an ear infection or ti's trigeminal neuralgia, and they both feel exactly the same
SO me and GP have a deal that if I happen to have pain in these areas I can drop by and take a urine test or he will check my ear and make sure it isn't infected

  I'm waiting to hear back from my GP.  I just wonder if I over did it this weekend, but it feels more internal than just muscle.  I have be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia last fall, but I think this has nothing to do with that, or am I wrong? So many things going and I am really wishing I could see the rheumy sooner than the end of July

Have you heard from your GP on this yet? I hope you got some help for you pain!

Also...if you want to see your rheumy sooner than July, can you call them and asked to be put on a waiting list? That way if there is a cancellation...they will go down the list and try to get some people in sooner. I have had many appts. moved up this way! Its helps!

i too have fibromyaliga, and get pain across my kidney area, so it could be that, but i had infection ruled out, you need to rule out an infection especially as its not bilateral pain , but to one side, get it checked out soon honey, so it dont get a further grip , if it snot infection, no harm done

If your GP rules out UTI also have Bun and creatinine check, this advice comes from experience.

Thanks for checking on me. I went to the GP on Tuesday. he said  that I could be starting to form kidney stones There was no sign of infection. I was advised to drink lots of water to help continue to flush my kidneys. So I've been drinking a lot of water and my back is feeling better. It could also be that he gave me Ultram ER to try as well for the Fibromyalgia pain. I also found out that the neuro that I saw back in Feb had diagnosed me with Raynauds and he (the neuro) never even mentioned it to me let alone offered ways to help the numb/ tingling feeling I've been fighting in my hands and feet! Talk about frustration. I will never go to that neuro again. My GP was surprised that no blood work was repeated since my symptoms were worse than the last time I saw the neuro. So keep your fingers crossed that I can get into the rheumy sooner from the cancellation list than my scheduled appointment at the end of July.

Hi Lesmom, you might try drinking cranberry juice. It's supposed to be great for the kidneys. If you don't like the taste they have a cranberry pill you can take daily. I suppose it works the same way. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Leslie,

Did your GP order additional bloodwork to test your kidney function?  I can see that if your urine sample didn't show signs of bacteria, protein, or blood that he wouldn't think it's necessary.  Definitely keep up with drinking a lot of water.  If you're lucky (not lucky that you might have kidney stones) you'll pass a stone without too much pain.  Don't hesitate to go back to your GP if the pain comes back.  One of the routine tests my rheumy requests is a comprehensive metabolic panel, which includes all of the kidney function tests (BUN, eGFR, creatinine, etc.).  Results from this test got me sent from my GP to a nephrologist the last time I had a UTI.
