Do I need an antibiotic?

Hi guys a quick question, my mouth has been driving me crazy for about 2 weeks. Started with a sore, burny tongue and so I have been working very hard to keep extra extra clean....lots of yogart...but it's not going away. It tastes so bitter at the back and my tongue is white...I figure it's candida which is not uncommon for a dry mouth. I have started taking 5ml nystatin 2X daily but am wondering if that's enough? been feeling kind on sick too, nausea and stomach pain, so i'm wondering if this candida thing can turn into an infection or is candida an in fact an infection? Anyway do i need som antibiotics for this? Thanks, Sandra

You know what I'm going to say - see your doc! Personally I don't think an antibiotic would help because I'm most likely to GET thrush after a course of antibiotics.

There are medications that would be quite likely to help but I think they'd be prescription only and if you're sore right down to your stomach I think you should see someone about it.

Scottie is right, antibiotics aren't used to treat fungal infections, which is what candida is, in fact the use of antibiotics can cause overgrowth of fungus and make the problem worse.

There are antifungals available by RX, but your doctor would have to determine first that the problem is indeed a fungus infection, and then order one of them (Clotrimazole and Diflucan are 2 that come to mind). The Nysatin you've been using is a topical form of antifungal, and if it hasn't been effective, you may need something systemic.
