Hi djean87  :)

Plaquenil can sometimes cause hairloss. The other thing that definitely can cause hairloss is an underactive thyroid. My hairdresser told me that if my hair was thinning a zinc supplement may help. I found it did.

Take care - Scottie  :)

My hair is half as thick as it used to be, very fine now.Im not on any meds yet as im still awaiting rheumy etc, so i know its not a side effect of that and my TSH is 2.4 so its not that , been thinning id say for 5 years, mentioned it to docs then and was told its likely hormonal, i was 32!!  I think now it muist be sjogrens, also obviously ive not felt well over the years and at those times it thinned, when i felt well ( remission) you could see the line of regrowth, happened when i was pregnant also , 13 years ago , was told that was usual in pregnancy, strangely i was ill then and feeling way i do now , id say it was sjogrens but i could be wrong

I am wondering if the hair thinning is a female phenomenon.  I never seem to hear any of the guys, all be it we are a minority, say anything about thinning hair.  My hair is thick and always has been, the only thing I noticed was after being on hydroxtchloroquine is an acceleration of gray hair.

Could the thinning hair be something hormonal or are women more fixated on things like hair and might tend to exaggerate a natural thinning process in their mind.  When I see all of the commercials on TV for beauty products I think, wow it must be hard to be a women when every time you watch TV someone is telling you your hair is the wrong color, not shinny or healthy looking, your skin is too wrinkly, dry, greasy or what ever.

Glad I am a dude, too lazy to be a chick.

My hair did that, along with vision problems, while on Plaquenil.  Those were the reasons I got off of the medication.  Along with low thyroid, thinning  hair can happen after going into menopause due to a drop in hormones.

It looks like your on Premarin....I bet its hormonal. I would have all your hormones checked, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid, DHEA and maybe that will help. They say too low of estrogen can cause this, which is what I have....my thyoid is coming back low now too..
After my hysterectomy, and now in menopause, my hair is just falling out in clumps...I really dont think its the sjogrens (with me anyways). Have you been on the same dose of Premarin for along time?

DJean,
I hope your hair loss is temporary.  In addition to the other things mentioned, I know that prednisone can cause it, too.  I do know how vain we women are about hair!  I've had a couple of times that mine has thinned - once on chemo, and once with thyroid issues.   Until it rethickens, just remember that you are beautiful.   If it gets really bad, hats are cool.  Hang in there!

I've had hair thinning and loss for over 20 years.  It was the first symptom that sent me to my doctor with concerns.  I was living overseas (hubby was in the military) and saw a German dermatologist.  He stated right away that it was an "internal problem" and that I should be checked for lupus.  After 25 years of maybe having something and maybe not, I've finally been diagnosed with Sjs by my doc here in Nova Scotia.  Over the years I have had periods of hair loss some worse than others.  But I also have hypothyroidism (for about 20 years)  so it is probably a combination of both.  I always have a bald patch on the back of my head by my neck.  It has very fine baby hair there all the time.

Although it's discouraging to lose your hair, I tell myself that it could be much worse.  I just wish I'd lose it on my legs and underarms.  No more shaving!! YooHoo

Epson, Epson, Epson . . . . nope, not exaggerated at all!!  I've had thinning hair since my thyroid was outta whack for ???? years (can't remember how long it's been, at least 10 years).  Never thickened up again after being on thyroid medicine.  Since starting Plaquenil the end of Aug. '08, I think it has gotten thinner . . and NO, it's not in my mind!!  I see lots of hairs coming out in my hairbrush, comb and on my clothes.  I agree - would be great if it was on our legs or underarms, when it's on the top of your head, not so good!  :(

Yeah, you're lucky you're a guy - you don't have to put up with the female stuff we do.   ;)
