Allergy to cellulose

Is anyone else allergic to cellulose? After taking Xylimelts for 10 days straight my palate has become inflamed and my mouth even drier... ????

By realizing this, I finally seem to have found an important piece of the puzzle. I remember also reacting badly to eye drops - which often contain (some type of) cellulose. As do many medicines, supplements and foods. It explains why I always get these weird side effects no one else seems to get.

Big question now is how to cope??

I'm very sorry to hear this!

I react to many many things because I have MCAS. Do you have other allergies?

Glad to hear I'm not alone  :)

When I got Sjogren's my intolerance level slowly crept up: alcohol, sugar, rice, white flour products (pizza, pasta, croissants), latex then suddenly pears & citrus fruits too and now lately bread and dairy to boot.

Tested positive for nickel and methylisothiasolinone.

How did you find out about MCAS?

I think you will be having to read labels really well and find something that doesn't have that ingredient. Maybe the best would be to ask the doctor for some suggestions. I would bet this is not a common allergic response. Makes life interesting for sure. Good luck. meirish

I've not tried this myself, but have seen some members mention that oil pulling can help mouth dryness.   Maybe worth a try?
Dry eyes (MGD), nose, mouth, occasional labyrinthitis,  dry skin , mouth ulcers, constant but fluctuating fatigue, IBS.  Blood tests and Schirmers negative,no Sjogrens dx yet.   Omega 3 algal oil, multivitamins, Evolve eye drops, Xailin eye ointment,  moisturiser (Instituto Espanol 10% urea).

I'm definitely allergic to methylisothiasolinone. I hate that stuff!!

I found out about MCAS through a group I was on FB with. I'm sensitive to salicylates. (better check that out for yourself) Many in the sals group also have MCAS.

So I got on the FB group for MCAS and realized it was an issue for me. From there, I was able to connect with someone in my area and I got tested by an immunologist who understands MCAS. Praise God!

I'm so lucky to have a good doctor within 35 miles of me.

Hi Jazz,

Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, mushrooms, radishes, zucchini, bell peppers and tomatoes are all high in salicylates, aren't they? I'm able to tolerate them well.

But spinach, walnuts and black tea make my mouth drier. Sugar makes me tremble.

So I think it's connected to something different than MCAS?

Thank goodness you were able to figure out what was bothering you. Is your Sjogren's better now too?

I just have to share this with you as sometimes things can just blow ones mind. My son and wife have a brown lab who has been having a swelling or what maybe was a tumor on the back of its hip area. Just weird. It would itch and the dog would be scratching away. Then the area would drain. They finally got sick of dealing with it and took dog to vet and none of the vets in the quite well thought of clinic had a clue as to what it was.

The dog was then referred to a dog specialist in another large town in MN because of the growth and because of borderline thyroid testing. Well, they removed and biopsied the area and it took several weeks to get results. Turns out it is some type of "allergy" and the dog was put on antihistamines daily without much luck. It was later that some learned the dog has some type of "mast cell" issue and I immediately thought of all the people on Sjogrens World with Mast cell issues.

The dog is now on a shot of some type of antihistamine product that is once a month and cost 140$. DIL says--just get one kid out of college and less debt and now the dog. Well, it is hard to believe that we are all so darned attached to our dogs that money has to be spent. But I love all my grand dogs so can understand spending the money. Turns out the vet specialist is so interested in this weird ailment that she is doing some research on it. Animals are more like humans than I ever knew. I didn't know they had thyroid trouble either.!!! Take care folks. meirish

Hi Maria, I have reactions to cellulose. I have just tested positive for sjorgrens related antibodies and am awaiting a follow up. I think part of the reason my diagnosis took so long is because I realised that my symptoms were worsening and spreading each time I consumed cellulose products or maltodextrin in supplements or medications. The drs had never heard of this and thought I was making it up. My primary symptoms were neuropathy, fatigue, anxiety, brain fog and worsening vision. I didn't know I had dry eyes until the Optician told me. This stuff is in 99% of medications leaving me unable to take prescribed meds and supplements. My symptoms persist, worsening because there is one medication that I have to take and cannot avoid and it contains a cellulose derivative (there are many of them) called croscarmellose sodium.

Really interested to link up if you are still about on the forum. I've just joined.
