Just came from the orthopedist who checked out my trigger finger, which has returned. He said its a combo of RA and OA and gave me a shot with lidocaine and a steroid. I'll know in about a week if it worked or if it's another surgery for me.

Oi, that shot hurt. Here's hoping it does the trick even if only for a few months, I don't want to have another surgery right now.

Thanks for listening.

Dear SjoGirl,

I had the cortisone injection for my trigger thumb.  It didn't work.

I had the surgery (outpatient) on my thumb and also had carpal tunnel release surgery on the same hand at the same time.  Two surgeries with only one trip to the OR.

1.  Both surgeries accomplished relief.

2.  I had no OT afterwards.

So, I would do the surgery again, if ever I needed it.

I have Carpal Tunnel problems in my other hand, but don't notice anything, so no need for surgery now.

Regards, Elaine

Thanks Joe and Elaine.

Elaine, I had carpal tunnel surgery last year which, while painful for a time, worked wonders. I have also had thumb surgery on my other hand to remove fluid and ganglion cysts. My hands are a mess.

I tried PT for the trigger finger, it helped but could not relieve the types of issues that I have  Fortunately, the initial pain from the shot did not last, I am just very sleepy from the meds. I slept for about 12 hours last night and plan to nap again today.

I am also planning to purchase some light splints to wear when I type. Have either of you used splints? Do they work? Do you have a favorite type?

Jazzlover, I cannot imagine, I think I would pass out if I had to have a shot in my foot.

Hi all I am about two weeks from my shot and it has helped a lot. My finger catches just a little bit in the mornings. I need to touch base with the doc this week and see what he has to say. What he said is that if it returns in a month or two then I need to see the surgeon. Here's hoping it lasts.

Hello all,

In case anyone wants to know the shot worked, the triggering is GONE! Score one for the orthopedist and zero for OA and RA!!

You are very lucky. Any time you get full relief and can avoid surgery It?s a good thing.

Hi Sophie,

That's very good news!  I had the same injection for the same reason, four years ago now.  It worked very well within about two weeks,  and I haven't had a problem since.

I hope your outcome is similar.
