Scalp/hair follicle pain

Ok, I know this sounds strange but my hair hurts! LOL... Nothing else is bothering me. My scalp isn't broken out, red, irritated or flaking. It seems to be worse on the day I need to wash my hair. It's usually pretty dry so I wash every other day. I use gentle, organic products. Any ideas what this might be? No headaches with this. I get my hair colored every other month but I don't think that is it. I got a small bottle of tea tree shampoo today to see if that helps.

This might sound silly, but have you started styling your hair differently or anything like that? I get scalp pain if I part my hair off to the side (instead of down the middle where it naturally falls) and if I've had my hair up all day and then I let it down. I'm certain this is from the hair pulling at an angle and when it's relieved, the area around the follicles gets achy.  If it's nothing like that perhaps it's a hormonal thing? I know some hormone changes can cause dandruff, so maybe it could cause pain, too.

I had this happen big time for about 5-6 months a couple of years back. It was so painful. No sores...went to dermatologist and given topical ointments. Nothing helped. My scalp burned and at time felt bruised. This just occurred on the top of my head. After it quit I mentioned it to my immunologist and he didn't have an answer but he wanted to know if it happened again.

I sort of figured it was a neuropathy going on and then down then some months later I was diagnosed with cervical spinal cord compression and had to have a spinal fusion. I then wondered if the pinched spinal cord was responsible. Make a note of it and of other symptoms, etc. We never know what we are being attacked by when we have autoimmune disease. Hard to sort things out some time. Irish

Oh my Irish, too bad a sore scalp turned out to be a spinal problem. That's quite serious. I hope it's much better now.

No, Deseree, thanks for the suggestion, but I did not change my hairstyle or how I parted my hair.

I did wonder about neuropathy but this only happens a  day maybe two after I last shampoo'd my hair. I've read that you can get a yeast build up in the follicles, so I tried some tea tree shampoo. So far so good. I have dry hair and use deep conditioners so I think I contributed to the situation by using such rich shampoos.

I too have experienced this same exact thing--even the fact that it seemed worse when my hair was due to be washed.  It has been off and on for me also for at least 5 years, maybe even longer.   It hurts at the crown/top of my head and sometimes I have sore spots in other parts of my head.  We may never know why we have these things in common, but at least we know we aren't alone in them.  I haven't found anything to help, just have to endure them.  :(  Thanks for posting about this.
