Use Your Computer To Help Cure Autoimmune Disease

Hi,
Many of us feel so powerless but here is something small and practical we can do.

IBM are investigating the role of the microbiome in autoimmune disease and they need your spare computing power to do it. The way it works is that when your computer resources are not being used much, the program will kick into action and start processing data. There is also a screensaver that shows what is happening with some fancy graphics.

Everytime we walk away from our computers for awhile and come back we can see a little bit of progress that has been made. We can also form a SjogrensWorld team so the data we analyze as a group will be counted.

It is pretty simple but if anyone needs help setting it up feel free to ask.

I am sorry. I am selfish. I prefer to be the only one using my computer. I believe it is easier to avoid viruses. A similar program was developed and used for SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence).

MOB computing is available for Raspberry Pi computers. At $35 each for the cost of a good laptop you can have 20 quad core processors each running at 1.2 GHz with no timeouts for users. (They can be as cheap as $10 each.)

IBM has more computing power than they know how to use and I am very skeptical about someone wanting to run software on my computer. The friends that did it for SETI did it on boxes that they did not ever use. SETI was a non profit.

This sounds too much like a scam.   I wont even click on the links because of that.   Being selfish has nothing to do not doing this

Jesus I think you guys are being a little paranoid. Yes Joe, you are right that this is similar to SETI. I think now SETI runs on this platform as well.

I have an extensive IT background and I can assure you that this software does not increase the risk of viruses. Also the software is open source so even if you do not trust a large corporation like IBM, rest assured that anything malicious would be found because anyone can view the code.

About World Community Grid:
World Community Grid is the biggest volunteer computing initiative devoted to humanitarian science, and is as powerful as some of the world's fastest supercomputers.
Started in 2004, World Community Grid is a philanthropic initiative of IBM Corporate Citizenship, the corporate social responsibility and philanthropy division of IBM. Through Corporate Citizenship, IBM donates its technology and talent to address some of the world's most pressing social and environmental issues.

Also the software works very well. It does not slow down my computer at all and if anyone is worried about this they can turn it on and off manually when they go away from their computer.

If anyone can view the code, have you read it? What language is it in? If that is C or a version of C it will run on the Raspberry PI. I purchased mine for $55 with extras. As my friends did with SETI a separate box is a good idea.

Hi Joe,
No I have not reviewed the code personally. There are installers available for Windows, Linux, Mac & Android. Some people are running in on Raspberry Pi but not sure if it is fully compatible.

You, or others might also be interested to know that you can set the program only to run at certain hours (such as overnight). Then apart from that, it will only run when the screensaver turns on.

It really would be fun to setup a team if anybody else wants to install it. In reality our contribution will be tiny but anything positive that we can do is worthwhile, imho. This is really simple to install. I am ready to help if anyone is interested.

I have no problem being thought as being paranoid.   My statement about this sounding like something that is not kosher is still how I look at it.  Each person can decide for themselves.

You did state that you have not reviewed the code, so you really have no idea what it is really doing or really has done to your computer.

Stop for a minute 'sand think about the SETI project looking for a coherent signal of meaningful information. Currently we have CW, AM, FM, PM and Spread spectrum signals to decode. We are missing torsional modulation. A theory that has not been implemented. To receive a signal on earth it has to be above 2 meter wave length. Remember that we are on a planet that rotates on its axis, that axis rotates around out sun and our sun rotates around the galactic center. With billions of stars having planets that rotate around them, sending and receiving a signal has odds many times greater than winning the power ball.  To increase the odds further, the inverse square law indicates that the received signal may not be above the background thermal radiation.'s

Now consider Auto Immune diseases. Before WWII they were identified by the Lister Institute and a connection to L-form bacteria was identified. Medical doctors will not except this because the Lister Institute forced the doctors to wash their hands and later they had the gall to suggest that they should autoclave their surgical tools to present infections. So maybe they do not under stand the medical process of bacterial infections and the bodies response.

In WWII a Japanese internment camp doctor took 16 bacteria and weaponized them by turning them into nano-bacteria (Nexus - Australia 90's). Using two of these nano-bacteria to infect a prisoner they could create the symptoms of auto immune disease. The technology was taken to China at the end of WWII. In 1963 (pop mech 63) is was brought to the USA and distributed among the allies for further testing. The documentation is out there but it is not easily accessible any more.

The medical doctors will not look at any of this as it does not fit their models. That is why we are told it is all in our heads. Anti depressants and Anti anxiety drugs are prescribed. Low dose antibiotics has some positive effects for us. A couple of supplements do slow the effects of the disease. The doctors refuse to study these as they do not fit their models. Yes I am very angry with doctors but they are the only options that we have.

Do you review the code of everything you install on your computer? Does anyone?

Your knowledge about the technicalities of SETI far exceeds mine so I can't really comment. I agree with you about the medical establishment, however there is hope. There is an increasing amount of research in "mainstream" scientific journals that implicates bacteria and the microbiome in autoimmune disease. That is precisely the reasoning behind this effort from IBM.

Somebody once said that the technologies that will be common in 10 years are already being used by tinkerers today. We can't really on the medical establishment so we have to follow the latest research and try to apply it ourselves.

I guess I am old fashioned but when things aren't put in simple language I tend to get a little "paranoid". I am also one of the old fashioned people who think that computers don't solve all the problems in the world. I think it is nice to call up some people and get together to discuss our autoimmune disease and see what we can come up with to make our lives a little better.

Anyone who wants to get into the computer stuff needs to know how to fix whatever happens because of the "stuff". That is about the first lesson I learned when I got my first computer. My kids laughed at me but now they understand me.  Also, the computer experts tell us not to get involved with everything that comes along as it can compromise our security. I, for one, think that anyone, anytime, can compromise my security and I am not going to make it easier for them. I am not being rude, I just have strong opinions about this matter..

Thanks for taking the time to introduce this. Irish

Just as a final note, IBM is not going to use my computer. IBM is not an "it" but a "they" as IBM is comprised of many people who I don't know and am not about to trust.

Snoweye, yes, I do try to review public domain code I install. You just triggered a hot button for me. In college we were given an extra credit project to bring down the colleges computer system. We did not know that SAC, San Diego Navel Research, Cheyenne Mountain, numerous defense contractors, and a number of banking establishments were on the system. Our instructor was deported. After they found out how it went down and that we had not gotten to the part of the project that we planned to bring it down, we were expelled.

The military would send viruses to my computer to see how I would detect and recover from them. Currently our infrastructure is under attack by foreign operators. They are attacking our electrical distribution system, our oil pipelines, and our telecom systems. Most recently our voting system. MOB computer programs are key to the hackers efforts along with social engineering. If you knew how easy it was to hack a personal computer, you would never keep any personal data on your computer or purchase on line.

The info you just offered is the reason why I don't do Facebook or Twitter. I also do not shop on line. Mostly do research, etc news, etc.n In just feel liken we are offering ourselves up to the enemies when we give out our info.

The sad thing is the enemy just has to work a tad harder to find out anything and everything about us. Life is not like it used to be. Irish
