Swelling in gums

A dentist once told me prednisone can mess up your gums
I've been on prednisone since November.
I have some swelling in a pocket??? between two teeth toward the back
I had a cleaning I think the end of May
Haven't been flossing nearly as often
I usually floss perhaps 3-4 x a week (not great to begin with)
I've been exhausted since the move and just barely doing it...maybe 1x a week flossing 😳Embarrassed.
Brushing is very regular though.
What might sooth this swelling and tenderness!?
Peroxide didn't help.
Do you think I should get my teeth cleaned early?
I usually get them professionally cleaned three times a year. I would normally be due early Sept.

It sounds like you could have infection in your gums. I have never heard that prednisone causes swelling in gums but it is well known that people on prednisone are at a higher risk for infection. The gums are really a prime place for infection.

It would be prudent to get your teeth cleaned early and get an assessment. It may even be that you will need an antibiotic. Is it possible that the flossing or not flossing or the way the flossing is carried out could have precipitated this event. Also, when a person is at high risk for pyorrhea the thing that develops first is the small pockets around the teeth. These need constant vigil. I see you are on 4 times a year cleanings so you probably know a lot about this. Good luck. irish
