Hi everyone,

I haven't been on the forum much as all thongs considered I've been ok...ish. but anyway:

Question: has anyone had this?
Sudden onset of spasms in stomach right up to my ribs. For those women out there it feels like labour pain. Writhing in agony for about 10 hours then starts to slow down and only the odd pang for the next couple of days. Can't walk syanding straight for a few days as stomach so tender.  Not gastro or food poisoning. No dioreahea or vomiting. Unbelievable pain :( this has happened to me twice now.

Vent:
Just can't seem to get through to the Dr about the body aching at night when I go to bed.  Always have aching but as soon as i go to bed ... worse and can't get to sleep. He just says to take nurofen but it doesn't help. Grrrrrrr!!

Thanks,
Jo

Hey Big, sounds like when I have a serious IBS attack when I accidentally ate to much of my trigger foods. Last time I had these cramps, and I didn't know yet what it was, I ended up going to the ER. I thought back and realized that I had been eating honey for several days. Try to keep a food diary and see if you have a trigger. Gastro prescribed hycosamine for emergency use.

From what I've read, IBS is more common among people with Sjogren's. Sounds like my IBS attacks too. At first, before I knew more about IBS, I thought the pain was way too severe to be something like IBS. I barely kept myself out of the ER on several occasions (only my $550 copay held me back). After talking to other people with IBS, I realized how bad it could be, and it's eventually what my doctor diagnosed my pain as after an abdominal ultrasound ruled out other causes. Most of my attacks are brought on by long periods of sitting, but triggers are different for everybody. Hope you get some answers.  :-\

Possibly gallbladder issues? It sounds like what happens to me and I definitely have gallbladder problems.

My first thought was gas - which is related to the IBS others are talking about. When this happens to me, I take symethicone to break up the gas, and eat food that tends to trigger a bowel movement.

Obviously it could be something else.

I am taking a stab here at the pain cause. The gallbladder is located underneath the lower right ribs and when one has an attack there can be severe pain with spasms in the belly and under the ribs and also through to the back and under right shoulder blade also.

I had this pain through out the last 4 months of one pregnancy and the plan was to take out my gallbladder after delivery. All the scans and testing was normal after delivery and no more pain. Many years later and I still have my gallbladder.

Ii would bring this to your doctors attention as this is not normal and gallbladder issues can need attention right away some times. Generally IBS is a little lower in the belly and can cause gas, etc. It is the location, type of pain, relationship of foods eaten and testing that will figure this out I would think. Be aware that fatty foods, spicy foods and sometimes any food will bother gallbladder. Good luck ad let us know how things come out. Irish

Do have your gallbadder tested, it could be that or as others have suggested more than typical gas. I"ve had a few bouts of the latter, they can be frightening and painful.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Tests show it's not pancreas  and liver and kidneys are ok. I think it may be a gas issue as some suggest. Ho hum 😀

On the bright side Dr has given me prescription anti-inflammatory tabs as well as low dose valium so I am sleeping much better. Yippee.

Thanks again

Jo,

Could it be costochonditis? I have had inflammation of the tendons between the ribs that causes spasms of severe pain like you described.

I've had this TWICE in the past two years, both times after having a cold or upper respiratory infection. Both times the pain is off & on for 2-3 months.

It hurt more when I inhaled, and it sometimes felt better when I lay on the opposite side (so when I breathed I expanded the other lung more, putting less expansion pressure on the injured side & ribs). Nothing really helped - and even an ER doctor offered me serious opiate pain medications.

{{{{HUGS}}}}} to you that you are suffering through this, Jo. I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Jo,

I had similar pains with a blocked gall bladder and had that out, they kept the stone to show me, was surprisingly big about size of those biggest marbles.  Had pain for several hours on several occasions over a few years before it got to be identified as gallstones.  Sitting up a bit in bed helped, many foods would trigger and then eating any food became unbearable when the stone was stuck before surgery.
Also, suffer IBS but pain is different, more stomach position and usually relieved quicker than the gall stones pain.  Pain was often associated with a more urgent feel to let something out so off to the loo, yet sometimes there was nothing to release.
Thinking of you,

Jus

Hi Dawn and Jus,

Thanks for the suggestions, I guess it could be either of those.

At this stage i will just have to see if it happens again and then have more tests to try and confirm what it is.

Jus is that you from Melbourne, how are you??

Cheers
