Blood blisters in mouth

I am curious as to how many of you develop blood blisters inside of your mouth. I don't get them a lot, but I do get them and have been on and off for 16 years. I have gone online looking for this topic related to Sjogren's but haven't found anything that is directly related to Sjogren's. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places? Sometimes the blood blisters occur in the roof of my mouth and because of that I know that it must be related to this disease somehow. They usually are gone in about 48 hours and really aren't too terribly bothersome but I would like the specifics on WHY they occur. Any help pointing me to answers would be helpful! Thank you!

Have you ever gone into the doctor or to your ENT when you have these blisters?? It seems like these need to be seen because they may have nothing to do with the Sjogrens but could be another autoimmune disease. There are a few blistering autoimmune diseases that can cause very small to larger blistering skin issues.

I have Bullous bipsythat was the first autoimmune disease diagnosed but no one paid that much attention to it except my Dermatopathologist. Remember that when we have one autoimmune disease we generally have a few others. My pemphigoid causes me to get very, very small blisters in the back of my throat. They are hard to see because they are sort of in the basement membrane. However, I get this rotten taste in my mouth that tastes like the serum that you will find in a blister. My little blisters will drain this serum and I can taste the salty yucky taste. It took me and the docs years to figure this all out..

Sometimes I get visible blisters in the back of my throat and on my gums. The doctors will biopsy these blistered areas and sometimes culture them to see what they contain. Sometimes they can be infected. My bigger blisters upon diagnosis of this disease were on my arms so they were more visible to the eye.

It would be interesting to see if these blisters that you have are from a different disease. Remember to ask about testing for lupus as this disease can have blistering oral sores. Good luck. Irish

"salty yucky taste'"?   Irish, I have that all the time, now.  I have no idea why, I thought it was the 'condition', if you know what I mean.

Is there anything to do about this?

I'm so tired of things.  But I don't think I have those blisters, anyway.

This is a long shot, BUT it is somewhat common for people with low platelets to get blood blisters in their mouth. A simple CBC can test a platelet count.
However, I'm sure there are several potential reasons for this
SLE, Sj.  Syndrome, IC, Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia, ITP (low platelets)... Various meds and lots of vitamins. Trying to eat healthy; seems to help a little.

Caroline, It is more than a salty taste. It tastes like what I think blood serum would taste like. In other words, the little blisters are leaking the serum in them. These blisters found in the blistering autoimmune diseases will leak serum. When I got diagnosed I was in such pain with a right arm the size of a log and all red and so hot. I was to the doc several times trying to find someone to do something until I could get into the dermatopathologist. This visit was when I met my dermatopathologist and he has been a great guy to keep around cause he is on my team.

He thought I had lupus the first time he saw me. My right arm ended up having a 13 cm blister ono the back of my arm. I did not know it was there. Full of fluid and so yukky and leaking a little. He cultured and biopsied my arm and it showed up having a fungal and bacterial infection plus biopsy positive for bullous pemphigus. He put me on a lot of meds plus prednisone.

The big deal about this whole thing is that I suffered for about 2 weeks plus I when I saw derm I had my youngest sons wedding in about 8 days. If I hadn't seen that doc I would have been in tough shape for the wedding plus my dress or any dress with sleeve would not have fit me. My arm was so huge!!! Thanks to a lot of meds the swelling went down and the dress went over the arm. Well, enough of that!!! Irish

I have had the same thing when my mouth gets really dry. But they aren't on the roof of my mouth. I have seen them on the back of my tongue and on my inner cheeks.

Hi  :)
I wondered if this could be the cause of blood blisters - Angina bullosa hæmorrhagica? (You'll have to use a search engine)

I have had a blood blister on the roof of my mouth several times and it was scary because I thought I was going to choke. They came up suddenly and quickly but luckily burst before breathing was a real problem. Left with peeling skin on roof of mouth that hurt for quite q while.

Not connected to SjS.

Take care - Scottie  :)

If you get these blisters of any kind, blood or just plain serum, it would be wise to have someone try to get a picture of it so you can take it to the doctor. There are several blistering autoimmune diseases that can cause such things. Some are totally a skin disease, but some have other outstanding symptoms along with the blistering. Autoimmune is just the pits trying to keep up with what it is and what it does to us.

Also, if these blisters are large enough that you thing they could be dangerous in some way or form it might be wise to see urgent care or emergency in order to get documentation and also treatment for the present attack. Any time you get documentation you are ahead of the game cause the docs have to take you seriously. Good luck all. Irish
