hi, does your throat react to strong odours?
i was so frightened this evening: instead of going to sleep or watching a tv movie, i thought to clean a piece of furniture with a product with a strong odour and my throat closed with a spasm. i  swear that from now on my furniture will stay dirty

I know what you mean.  We used to live in New Orleans and the shrimp boil there did the same thing to my throat.  Anytime I smell those spices my throat wants to close and it makes me cough and choke.  Hope you get feeling better soon.

Blue:  technically this is anaphylactic shock   You should go to ER if/when it happens.   Or--you can keep an epinephrine pen. Yours was partial or moderate or the swelling could have choked you completely

Hi! I am new here BUT used to help this board 14 or 15 years ago! The throat wanting to close up has happened to me and I am glad to know I am not alone. Sometimes I wonder if what I experience happens to others as well...another GOOD reason for boards like these! Normally mine wants to close from floral scents and other strong odors. Not fun; a bit scary! Thank you for addressing this!

ccc i know. when i wonder about my sjs i remember 6/8 years ago i was having works in the house of my mother who had died in rome, lots of dust and hard odours and i had strange sensation in my throat, it was burning  a lot and i had some mucous out of the blue. i remember i called one of my many friends doctors, and told him what was happening; he asked if i had cortisone with me and i did not, i was at the airport going back to milan. but i had something like vicks for my nose and i used it. i knew there was some cortisone in it and everything passad in a moment.but since then i started to notice that bleach for instance or even my perfume otr the thing we use to take away nail polish, bothered me. i did not care so much, i just took more care. i think that these were the first signs of dry throat not allergies. then i had a very bad virus that affected my throat, i never had so much pain.of course i went to the doctor, it was winter and in milan there was that virus that lasted  for so long. i" interviewed "many friend who were home with the same but i was feeling worse than anybody. the doctors( in one month ive seen at least a couple), made me fibroscopy, they said that my throat was very red but i did not have the  signs of an infection, why i had such a pain?  i think because my throat was more sensible because it was starting to be dry. food got stuck in my teeth but my dentist did not see any difference in my mouth and i had  no difficulty with eating. so why should i be worried? my eyes were already dry like most of my friends of my age... and then all of the sudden the nightmare started.i woke up with no saliva one morning. five years had passed from the first episode

I wonder if this is just typical chemical sensitivities? Have you tried antihistamines to see if that would help? It's nice that a lot of companies now make unscented cleaning products and cosmetics.

So far, the only thing that has caused spasms in my throat and SEVERE burning to where I thought I was going to have to go to the ER has been reflux. It happened in the middle of the night to boot.  Now, I take nexium religiously. If that never happens again, it will be too soon.

Try googling MCS or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

I'm struggling with that, this summer more than ever. Just now starting to take it seriously on my own count. Antihistamines don't really do a zit for it, the only remedy is avoiding the irritants. For the lungs of a person with MCS the chemicals are pretty much the same as glutein for the stomach of a person with glutein intolerance.

its not just chemicals. its any strong odour or flavour such as extra virgin olive oil, ginger, vinegar, lemmon etc. thats why i think that its dry mouth. yes i have reflux but not always fortunately. and by the way, there are not always the signs of it in my larynx. i had a fibroscopy done last week and it was normal

Anaphylaxis is part of Mast Cell Activation Disorder. You may want to Google that.

People definitely have the throat closing thing in response to fragrances, chemicals and other triggers.

You can have Sjogren's AND MCAD or MCAS .. I do.

Those are all connected with salicylates. I am very sensitive to chemicals and all of the above.
