Medications for dry mouth pilocarpine or evoxac?

I would like to know how many of you are on pilocarpine or evoxac and does it work for you and the side effects of each one.  Which one works better for you?   Is it worth the side effects or have you just stuck with more natural remedies?  Also once you have dry mouth does it get better and worse at times or stay the same all of the time? Do you have periods of feeling somewhat normal?  And also what does a flare mean to you?  This symptom is dibilitating!  I cannot imagine having this forever. It is very depressing . I think about it all day long . It consumes me! So far I have not tried either of these two medications .

I tried both in the beginning and Evoxac works better for me.  The only side effect for me was sweating.  I have been on it for nine years and the sweating has subsided.  I couldn't swallow food without the medication.  It has given me quality of life.

The package insert tells you to give it three months to reach peak stimulation but works right away.

Also, generic works great for some but notme.  My rx is for brand name only.

Does this medication make you feel like you have normal saliva or does it still feel different?

In Canada we can't get evoxac. I use pilocarpine - the brand name because the generic here does not have the same controlled delivery as the original.
It made me sweat at first but I am very used to it so that seldom occurs. It makes a big difference to my eating and swallowing - I would not want to give it up

Hi,

I used to use pilocarpine and it did work. It did make me have sweating episodes though.

I went to a dental specialist who recommended a saliwell stent (mark 2 I think).  It is like a mouth guard and gives an electrical current to the saliva gland.  It is amazing!! In fact I used it for about 3 months and haven't used it since. I haven't need to because my saliva flow is nearly normal. I'm still a bit dry but no pain, stinging, hurting in my mouth.

Good luck deciding what to do.

I use generic evoxac made by Ranbaxy. About a half hour after I take it, it makes me feel like I produce normal saliva for about four to five hours. I find it especially helpful to take before going to bed (no more overnight or morning sore throat!) and also before socializing or doing something that requires a lot of walking. I don't experience any side effects.

I tried generic evoxac by another company but found it didn't work at all. Another board member had the same experience. You can visually recognize the difference between the two because the company that made the generic that didn't work for us printed numbers on the side of its capsules whereas Ranbaxy prints "Evoxac" on the side of its capsules.

I haven't tried pilocarpine or name brand evoxac.

BigleyJ.    Thanks for the information on saliwell.   I am curious as to why I have never heard of anyone using it?    Never heard it mentioned in any of these boards.   Has anyone else out there tried it?  And is it available in the US?  Is it a new product or something that has been around but doesn't work well so never took off?    Just curious
