I had an appointment with my immunologist today and I asked him about the CoQ10. He said that it is made by the body so it is a normal substance. He didn't have much experience with it so he is interested to see if it helps decrease dryness. I was concerned about it mixing with all my other meds and he said no problem. He told me to just take it and see what happens.

I am going to try taking it also but need to find some first. I hope everyone will come back and start a thread and share their experiences so we can share it with our doctors. This way it will be a whole bunch of us and not just ourselves and a couple others Irish.

Just make sure you try the Ubiquinol form of it Irish, as that one has specific studies
on its effectiveness for saliva increase. If you can't find it in your area you can always order it online.

I find it strange doctors question its role in saliva production when there have been very clear studies pointing precisely to this.

Thanks for the info. My doctor doesn't disbelieve the info I told him but he deal with so many really, really sick people that are on the big gun meds and have much more than Sjogrens and he has not given it other than for heart issues. He knows a lot about it but has not been around people taking it for reasons other than heart. I did not hear of it being given for anything but heart issues either.

The interesting things is that so many of these supplements are having more good effects than previously known about. Irish

Given that my brother and mother have complained about over-salivation (they both supplement with the "original" CoQ10 form ubiquinone), I'm thinking that I'm going to try ubiquinone, as everything I'm reading doesn't seem to point towards any significant difference between the two, other than cost. I've been reading up as much as I can about it over the past 24 hours, and I'm starting to believe the ubiquinol hype was generated by kickbacks from the company that currently holds a patent on it until 2021.

I bought a months supply of the CoQ10 just to try. I wanted to see if my body was able to change the original to the ubiquinol. It seems as our body ages it loses the ability to change the original to the Ubiquinol which our body metabolizes more easily.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the bottle is that the original smells pretty bad. I am almost afraid to take it cause I think my reflux will get aggravated. Just my take on it at this time. Irish

That's what gets me. It doesn't make sense about changing one way or the other. Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol are the same thing - one is oxidized, the other "reduced". When in the cell, they freely accept or pass on an electron and become the other (-one becomes -ol and vice versa), and the body consistently keeps balance between both.

I'll buy that one might be more bioavailable / absorb-able than the other, but I'm questioning how much so and where the cost-effectiveness lies with similar results with similar dosing, or similar results with a slight increase of ubiquinone dosing.

I just wanted to follow up on this and say that the major benefit to me has been energy. It increased when starting ubiquinol, decreased when stopping, and increased again with restarting. I have not noticed any major salivation changes but mine is pretty well controlled on NAC except for flares so it would not be dramatic if it is helping that.

Pete- which company holds the patent? I began with ubiquinol after reading that it showed better results for those with Sjogren's while the ubiquinone worked better for those without.
I'd be interested to hear your experience with the ubiquinone.

The company is Kaneka Nutrients.

Pete- From what I can tell Kaneka Nutrients only have a patent on bio-identical naturally fermented CoQ10 and there are another 3 Japanese suppliers.

Hi Sharon,

They had the fermented patent first, then a few years later obtained the patent for Ubiquinol. In fact, as a marketing aid, Kaneka also owns "ubiquinol.org" - it all seems shady to me.

When I was looking into it, I searched Amazon for a variety of ubiquinol products, and every one mentioned trademarks/patents from Kaneka.

Then they may have a monopoly on that market,
but as far as I'm concerned as a consumer, all that really matters is if the Ubiquinol
works or not. I've been very satisfied with it so far and actually had a salivary gland specialist "doubt" I had SJS since my saliva was "normal" when he checked me after being on Ubiquinol for some time.
I have not tried the Ubiquinone form but am interested if perhaps the same results might be achieved with it. I know it does help many non-sjoggies.

I hear ya, Sharon.

I just don't see (can't say that I've looked deeply) anything that says that Ubiquinone doesn't help with sicca/Sjogren's - just things that say Ubiquinol does. As always, YMMV, yadda yadda, and everyone is different and will react differently. I figure I should at least give it a try and see what happens, and if it works, then I can spend the money I save for all the other highly priced dryness remedies that I buy.
