Antibiotic Warnings in the News

I wanted to once again share some recent information about the warnings for fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox, etc).  There have been about 20 news stories in the past 3 months about the risks of these antibiotics, with new stories coming out every day:

All of these meds have been on the market for many years. I remember taking Avelox at least 30 years ago. It is interesting that all these side effects are showing up now. I would guess that this is because the docs are having to use it more because the other antibiotics are not used as much because of bacterial resistance. It takes the stronger antibiotics to kill these infections.

After the Levoquin, etc there are only a couple of antibiotics that work orally and they are spendy....then the IV meds are needed. Irish

I am allergic to amoxicillin, cephalexin, biaxin, sulfa, rifampin and can't take levoquin because of central nervous system effects. I have MRSA cultured chronically so I live on the edge as I also have severely low t-cells and low IgG levels. What keeps me going is the IVIG I take for my myasthenia gravis, one of my 5 autoimmune diseases. Seems we all live on the edge for one reason or another.

I hate those drugs... they have been on my "allergic" list for about 15 years. The last time I took one it gave me nerve pain.

I fear the day it will be a choice between life and death.

I learned about them the hard way. Me and my husband hadn't even read anything about them, but we knew it was them when I had the second tendon rupture after the second time of being on them. Never again.
