Yeah they really need to post severity indexes with every symptom and map it to probable causes, rather than syndromes.

I mean there is enough research on the planet that everyone should be organized by now, and I can only imagine 5,000,000 doctors with Texas Instrument calculators.

That's how I feel.


Really, Jeopardy launches Watson, and the best application they can come up with for the guy is health insurance. That's a joke.


All that being said, maybe someday clinics will reject doctors, and people can simply walk in, pay to get a test done and walk out with results.


Somehow I think deciphering 80 years of chicken scratching will be difficult however.


Look at things way, pharmacies are now located on college campuses, in the form of candy dispensers.



Not to be mean to doctors, because they obviously know a thing or two, but I just really feel as if I am being tossed to the wayside because they obviously have shitty high stress jobs and don't need to listen to every single thing someone has wrong with them, let alone do they truly have the time to do so.

So, let's think of things as liberating us all.

My additional 2 cents on the topic.

I am not a machine.

I am a person.

I do not fit into a nice neat little box of a category of nicely arranged symptoms that an inanimate object aka computer can accurately assess.

I like my doctors who are also PERSONS, not machines, that grasp the concept that we not just the sum total of our symptoms.

Yes I caught the part in the article:

Sorry to the author of the article, but the writer is not qualified to assess what I need as an individual. And I am ever so thankful that many of my specialists are vehemently opposed to this proposed paradigm shift in medicine - and it isn't because of their salaries either.

While computers have their usefulness, their flaw lies in 80% roughly of all communication is non-verbal.

As a person, I NEED that in person interaction with my doctors and their respective assistants/nurses whatever.

A computer is not compassionate, yet MOST of my doctors ARE.

The health/well-being of a PERSON involves much more than a checklist of symptoms and a diagnosis.

What a computer cannot give me, for example, is a lift in spirit I got at Endo office yesterday for that whatever stim test. I had reaction shortly after injection and woah - they got nurse and put me back in exam room. I was really wooooooooozy and really feeling weird. After she commented that they're kind of used to expecting the unexpected with me, I told her I was so tired of being a Zebra - that I wanted to be a thoroughbred instead (racehorse for those not savvy about horses).

She responded "Amanda, you already are a thoroughbred".

Now granted, this was the nurse yesterday. However, no computer can replace the interactions I have with my doctor specialists. Even more fulfilling from the person aspect.

I needed that lift yesterday. No computer replacing my doctors who also give me a "life" in spirit, even if we don't get to the root cause of the symptoms right away, at least my doctors have the creativity to step out of the box (except one who I have to wonder if he isn't a robot - he's not, but sure behaves like one) and consider the anomalies and even give ear to my own theories - which often have proven to be accurate in the long run.

A computer isn't going to care. A computer isn't going to smile at me like my docs do when they enter the exam room, or shake their heads in puzzlement when whatever health issue did a u-turn again and we don't know why. A computer isn't going to care.

And when computers and related technology replace our doctors, what then?

I am human, and proud of it. My doctors may not be perfect, but keep in mind that computers were designed by humans who are also not perfect.

I'll stick with in person doctor visits over a computerized assessment any day of the week.
