Okay so I have been pretty lucky in not having lots of aches and pains with sjogrens so far (only been diagnosed for over a year though).  And now out of the blue first my left lower leg starting to hurt - not hot to the touch - no redness and very minor swelling...now it has moved into my upper front part of my leg and the other leg now too...I will make an appt with my dr but had seen him about three weeks ago when my left leg started to hurt originally - he looked at it - said it was not swollen much and did not think anything of it.

Just wondering if anyone else has these symptoms...read something like polymyalgia rheumatica?  I am wondering if sjogrens is inviting some friends to visit and live with me?  LOL

Thanks all for listening.

So sorry you have to deal with that! Are you taking magnesium supplements? I have always suffered from RLS and bad leg cramps. Sometimes just squeezing the calf muscles sets off a very bad camp. Never figured out why, but taking 250 mg magnesium at bedtime daily helps. When I go through bad episodes I take 500mg.
Hope someone else might have a better answer!

The only time that every happened to me was after a long bike ride (100 or more miles) on a hot day...and it was due to mild dehydration.  The cramps were very painful.

Hi Finally,

What kind of pain is it? Dull, sharp, throbbing?

I often get a kind of dull, aching leg cramp, like leg is heavy. Muscles become very hard and stiff. The only thing that helps me is high dose magnesium (1250 mg/p/day) and potassium (2x 99 mg/p/day).

Good luck!

I get severe muscle spasms and have for years. No swelling though.

The doc's just shrug when I bring it up. Hubby goes with me to appointments when he can, and even his description of these spasms don't seem to register with the doc's. Over the years I have been rx'd muscle relaxants, but they only help minimally and contribute to the horrible fatigue.

Mine are quite painful and have me screaming in pain.

I have tried, (and still take) calcium, potassium, magnesium to no avail. I also drink lots of water to stay hydrated, as dehydration can be a cause of muscle aches and cramping.

By the sound of it, in your case I think polymyalgia rheumatica could be a good possibility. At any rate, your doctor needs to take these new symptoms seriously! I hope you doctor pays more attention this time around.

Hello,
I have very bad leg weakness and it will become pain if I don't rest. It feels like I am dragging with me 500 pound bricks on each leg. I don't know if this is what you mean or are feeling, but this is me. It is a daily thing, and had worst days then others, rest helps for a bit, but it does alter my life. I would certainly ask your rheumy or a neuro if you may have another autoimmune disease showing up or maybe a neuropathy which likes to hook up with Sjogrens. So many have multi autoimmune diseases

So far, the only time I am getting lower extremity pain and spasms is when my potassium or calcium is low. So far...

How do you know when your calcium and potassium levels are low? Maybe this is why I keep getting leg cramps. Maybe I need to eat some bananas and drink some milk?

7 years of experience post total thyroidectomy with labs on average every 3-4 months. Calcium is always wacked as my parathyroid glands are failing. Then when I was dx'd with Sjogrens, I pretty much drink a gallon of water a day on average. Foot cramps for me are low calcium. Leg and foot cramps for me are low electrolytes and potassium. Also validated by labs and clinical symptoms.

So now, I know to mix in with my water something like 100% Cherry juice (diluted as I am not supposed to have juices at all per dentist) which has a good amount of potassium in it.

Magnesium.

Yes that too, but the standard serum test for Mg is not a reliable indicator as most Mg is stored in the bone.

I found that supplementing with magnesium, not only have I not had migraines since starting that supplement, but my fibromyalgia pain is not as severe.

My cramps actually turned out to be Isaac's syndrome, another autimmune gift. My electrolyte levels are always good and discovered magnesium actually agrevaded the condition.
Amazing how much I learned in two years since this post started!
