Next chapter in broken arm saga

CT scan results - disappointing says consultant. Saw him yesterday. Was actually offered an operation today but I have a couple of hospital appointments next week that would have been awkward to rearrange at such short notice.

So - in two weeks time I am going to have a bone graft so instead of just having a sore arm I will have a sore hip as well. I wish he'd pinned it back in August! It's virtually pain free now except when it moves certain ways. It's a long way off being fully functional though so I will have the op because I want my right arm back.

I shouldn't be whinin about it really. So many service people are having awful things happening to their arms and legs and the rest of them and this at the end of the day is a self inflicted break. Just hope it heals this time round!

He is going to test my Vitamin D. I told him I was taking a supplement because it had been low and he said had it been tested since? It hasn't been. He said sometimes it can be hard to get levels up and if its low it may have inhibited healing. He says I do seem to have built cartilige but the bone is sadly lacking!

Thanks for posting the update Scottie, I've been thinking of you and hoping that you'd seen the specialist. I'm sorry to see you need a bone graft.

Are you still thinking about a 2nd opinion?

Hi - I've ascertained that the consultant I have been seeing will probably share the operation with a doctor who is an arm specialist. I have specifically asked that the registrar who accused me of drinking too much (without actually asking about consumption but based on hand tremor - one hand only) does NOT operate or come anywhere near me.

If I tried to switch hospitals now it would drag this out for another couple of months rather than weeks.

Man, Scottie, this has been a long ordeal for you. I will be glad when this is over so that you can proceed with the healing that should have been done and over with. It hopefully will be a better summer than you had last year. HOpe it heals fast and the pain is at least over when the warmer weather comes. Take care my friend. Irish

Thank you all for your replies and your support.

I realised today that my husband is 'playing ostrich'. He was talking about us staying in the front bedroom rather than moving back to our normal room where the bed was too high for me to negotiate it.

I pointed out that I would be back in the recliner in the front room for awhile. He says that is me be pessimistic and I don't KNOW that. Well - I DO know that. I know I will be advised to sleep in a chair for awhile. I'm not being pessimistic - I'm being reralistic. I haven't broken it to him yet that when I do get back into a bed I expect to have it to myself for at least a couple of weeks!

While it's not good th at you're going to have surgery, it's good that healing is in sight. I will be thinking about you next week, and sending positive, healing vibes.

I know what you mean about having a bed to yourself. My husband is such a restless sleeper - and very noisy, that I took to the spare bed after my recent surgeries. We both slept so much better that we've kept that arrangement - with visiting rights, of course!

Scottie, is it possible to have a cadaver graft instead of taking bone from your hip? I have a cadaver graft in my neck where they took out the disk between two vertebrae and inserted the bone graft between the two vertebrae on the front of my neck. That way you don't have to recover from the pain of the graft, which may be worse than the pain from the surgery on your arm.

I would be careful of anything foreign (cadaver bone) being used just because of  rejection risk and may increase the immune response.  Just my thoughts.  Of course if there isn't a better option, I would accept those risks.  Just something to consided.
