I fell on my shin bone 10 days ago and it hurts really bad. I can still walk on it. I went to the doctor 3 days later. She did an Xray and said it was badly bruised. Today it hurts worse than the earlier days and its much harder to walk, so painful when I put pressure on it. I put ice and elevate. At night the swelling goes down but comes right back as soon as I put my foot down. My bottom leg swells and my whole foot.  I called the doctor and they looked at the Xray again and said its bruised. Pain is unbearable. Anyone have any thoughts? Should I ask for an MRI or is this how bad bruising feels?

G'day shevonne, The bad thing about leg injuries is a possibility of a Thrombosis.  That is a blood clot in the leg.

A blood clot can travel to anywhere in the body and lodge even up to the heart.  See your doctor again.  Ask him/her if that is a possibility.    I hope you feel better soon.

I was thinking a possible blood clot too - it can be dangerous if it dislodges and travels to your heart. I don't really know what a bruised bone is though, but I would think it should be getting better, not worse...?

I'm so sorry this happened to you.  It sounds miserable.  Yes, severe bruising can cause blood clots and bruised bones are extremely painful and slow to heal.  There is also a condition called Compartment Syndrome.  I, personally, would want to see the doctor so they could SEE it - the bruise, edema, inability to walk etc.  I hope you feel better soon!!

Went to the ER and they said I have cellulitis. Gave me antibiotics. They didn't find a blood clot. Thank God!

I've had a cellulitis infection too Shevonne and those can be very nasty.  In my case I didn't recognize what it was soon enough and ended up having to be taken to the ER and given IV antibiotics for a week.  Certainly keep an eye on it and if you are not responding to the antibiotics or if you see the redness/swollen area expanding, please make sure to get medical attention right away.

Cellulitis can be a very serious infection if not treated quickly and correctly.  I'm so glad you got the treatment you needed.

Hugs,

I am glad you got it looked at.

We Sj's are so use to a variety of aches and pains it is easy for us to try and cope ourselves. It is also easy for medial staff to over look things.

If something hurts worse then before it is best to get it seen, sometimes by someone new.

I was going to suggest that you get checked for cellulitis. This infection happens a lot more than people think. It is an infection within the cells. Comes from some really weird injuries. A friend of mine in nurses training had new tennis shoes that rubbed her heel. She wore the shoes one long day and in 24 hours she had cellulitis and was in the hospital for a couple of days and IV antibiotics.

I have had it several times. My hubby had it in both lower legs along with phlebitis and was in the hospital a week. Penicillin drugs are the drug of choice for this infection.

The shin bone has poor blood flow to the area because their just isn't that much tissue there. So when infection starts it goes fast. Cellulitis usually has a lot of pain. Just a little info to help people know what to look for.

Also, some of those insect bites that get infected can turn up with cellulitis. Hope you get better fast. Irish

Hi Shevonne,

Wow, I'm sorry to hear of your leg injury and the pain you are having with it.  Cellulitis is a nasty infection and should be treated as soon as possible.

My mother got cellulitis on her arm from a bug bite and by afternoon had a red line infection going up her arm. Also, one of my coworkers had to be hospitalized and given IV's because he got cellulitis on his face from a tiny shaving cut.

I have no medical bckgrd but I think if the pain in an injured area is getting worse or seems extreme for the injury/illness, you should see a dr and have it looked at more closely.

I'm glad you followed your gut and kept going back to the drs. for an answer.  I hope you heal quickly with the antibiotics.

I used to play football years ago and have had loads of bruised bones, yes they do hurt, I'm so glad you haven't got a blood clot so basically it's just rest you now need.

Take care.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts! It's still very painful but I am definitely resting. I am nausous now but don't know if its the meds or the horrible fact that I am prepping for a freaking colonoscopy tomorrow. The GI says she still will do it. Definitely had.better days, lol.
