hi All.

I live in central Ohio and approx. 6 years ago was given seeds from a mimosa tree and I planted them.

I was able to get several to sprout but only one made it to "adult hood" it is 7 feet tall. It has only bloomed once when it was 3 years old. We must have had a mild winter that year. There is a very old mimosa tree growing in town 5 miles from me (we are rural) and it blooms every year...I have seen it.

Anyone else living in a northern state have a mimosa tree growing in their yard? Are you in town or rural?

thanks for any info.

Hi eye2dry,  ;)

I don't think I'm familiar with a mimosa tree; I'll need to research them and find out more!

Is this unusual that it's lived and bloomed in your area?  Meaning, are they normally a "southern" or warmer climate tree?  See, now I'm interested in learning.

We live in SE Kentucky now, and it's new for me to see "mistletoe" growing high in the trees.  There are at least 12 big bunches of it in the tree behind our house; so odd to see this green ball of stuff just hanging out on bare branches before the leaves come on.   I lived in Ohio most of my life so never knew of this stuff til recently.

sorry I am not good with plants at all.

I had a African Violet for five years that would only bloom the week of secretary's day.
And I was nice to it too. LOL  ;D

I'm originally from N.J. so never heard of a mimosa tree until I came south.

A friend of mine who lives on a big cattle farm calls mimosa trees "weed trees."  We have one that volunteered to grow in our yard, and my husband (who's from central New York state) loves it because of the wide shade.  I love the pretty flowers!

I did a Google search for mimosa tree and found a great website called Daves Garden where I found lots of great information on mimosa trees.

Hope this helps!  :)

Thanks to all who answered my post on the mimosa question.

Down in the southern states I heard they call the mimosa tree a "trash tree". I guess it's the ideal climate for it to grow and it drops seeds and seedlings sprout everywhere...In Ohio I don't think I'll have that problem.

I just love the ferny lacy type leaves...like a locust tree has. The pretty pink pom-pom type flowers. They say hummingbirds love them. I did not notice any smell to the flowers. I hope I get lucky this year and it blooms.

MELD256..since you live in Kentucky, have you seen and/or tasted a paw-paw tree fruit. My mother in law is from Paintsville Kentucky and she says they taste like sweet custard, the fruits look like small brown bananas,

I will sure let you all know if it blooms. I am excitied.

I live in Oklahoma and we have lots of Mimosa trees.  You are right about them.  They do drop lots of seeds and you can get Mimosa trees all over your yard.  My parents have a big one and pull little Mimosa out all the time.  But they sure are pretty when they are in bloom.

I just started one last year. It actually looks like a stick right now. I hope it mad it thru the winter.
They are beautiful trees.

Good luck!
Love and blessings, harlin

Sorry that I'm just now responding, eye2dry.  No, I've never tasted a paw-paw but I've seen the tree.

Now I think I know what a mimosa looks like; they may grow around here, too.  We have LOTS of trees in this area!  I live in the city but just outside of town, there are tree-covered hillsides in all directions.  Very pretty!

harlin, I hope your tree will grow this year, too.  ;)

In East Tn. we have lots of mimosa trees that grow wild, and I want to get one started too. I remember my dad use to have one years ago, but he cut it down, because it spread very wide, and he wanted to plant several other bushes, and flowers where it took up the space.

They are so pretty.

Ok, I looked up Mimosas (on Dave's Garden, BTY) and saw how pretty they are.  I'll have to be on the lookout for them around here, since I'm not sure I ever saw one, or just didn't recognize it.  ;)

I hope you can start yours, susanep.  Sounds as if you'll have good luck with it in Tn. If you don't mind my suggestion, perhaps you could plant one in memory of your mother.
A family member of ours planted a magnolia tree in memory of my father-in-law just after he passed, and I thought it was such a sweet thing to do.
