My new iPhone 4S is waiting to be picked up at the store.  I'm a newbie to the smartphone world.  Does anybody have any tips?

I hope nobody calls me very soon since I don't know how to operate the thing.

I have two books downloaded on my iPad and one in the paperback form.

My hairdressers say I will love it!

MissyLouWho?

One thing, if you aren't aware already.  This applies to all phones with gps technology, not just iPhones.  If you are someone who uploads pictures to the internet (Facebook, forums, etc) you might want to set your GPS to 'off'.  There was a news story about how anyone can right click someone's pictures and actually get the coordinates of where they were when the pic was taken.  It's then easy for them to find where you were, or where you live.  This was from an actual news broadcast, and the police were showing how easy they can follow people just by the pictures they post.

Other than that, I have never had an iPhone, so I can't help  :P

I love my iphone. My best advice is to use it, easiest phone or tech. device I've ever had.

MissyLouWho is correct but under settings & location services you can keep your GPS on & only need to turn off the camera (under location, you can still use camera but location info. is turned off).

You'll love your 4S.  I'm saving up to upgrade.  Apple has a whole library of video tutorials on the iPhone (and everything else).  I highly recommend them, if you're new to iPhones.

In addition, the Apple retail stores have free hands-on workshops (just make a reservation) where you can learn all the details and set up your phone the way you want it.

If your email is gmail or yahoo, it's really easy to set it up on the iPhone.  If you have a less common host, like GoDaddy, I suggest going to the workshop.

You'll be able to just play with it as soon as you get it, but to appreciate and use the bells and whistles, it's good to watch a tutorial.

I spent all morning with my iPhone 4S and I have to say I love it.  It was easy to set up.  I changed the font to a large size to make it easier for me to read.  I?ve still got to enter in my appointments on the calendar.  I downloaded two new apps.  One the Verizon lady told me about called findmyiphone.  This is in case it is lost or stolen.  You installed on another iOS device like an iPad.  If your phone is lost your stone ? you can locate it and either lock or wipe it.  My gynecologist suggested I download 360 Panorama to work with the camera.

My SCOSCHE reVIVE IV USB Wall Charger came today.  It allows you to charge four USB devices at one time.  This will work great for my iPad, iPod and iPhone.

It is connected to our wireless newtwork.  I can surf the web, check my e-mail, see my local weather, check stocks (if I knew how to do that), see my calendar, check maps, read books with my Kindle App.  And I haven?t even tried out Siri yet!

Also, per your instructions I changed the camera to off under the location settings in case I decide to post a picture on Facebook.  People won?t see my exact location.

Thank you for all the great tips.

The app I like is Find My Car.  When you park your car, it locates it on the GPS map and you can tweak the pointer to get it exact.  You then take a picture of your car's location.  When you need to find it, it shows you the route on the map and the pic.  Great for brain fog.

Find my Car sounds great.  I'll have to check that one out.

I like my Fitbit app for my Fitbit Tracker.

I got the Emoji App for the Emoticons. Am I understanding correctly what I read, that the emoticons won't show up in e-mail or on cell phones that are not iPhones.  That's a bummer!

Does anyone know if Apple automatically updates Safari and iTunes on the iPads and the iPhones?  My PC got the notice this morning that there is a Safari update.

I love the new PGA Tour HD app.  And I finally found an antivirus / antispyware app called Lookout Mobile Security.

To get longer life on my droid, I turned off bluetooth, wifi, and GPS. That gives me several days between charge and keeps the phone from making strange noises.

So lovely to see your name again, Lighthouse!

I LOVE my iPhone.

Since you have an iPad, it won't be hard for you to learn to use the phone, I should think.

I really didn't need a smart phone, but I wanted one to play with.

My friends even watch movies and read book on their iPhones.

I play 'words with friends' in Facebook, and read the newspapers.  So I'm never bored if I have to wait anywhere now.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Hugs

Elaine

Happy thought to you!

Carolina,

I love Words with Friends too!  I have the free version on the phone and the paid HD Version on my iPad.

I'm looking forward to having it during my doctor's visits in the waiting rooms.

And, I have the O'Fishel Weather App from WRAL to get the latest weather.  Yesterday, dad was complaining again about the Weather Channel being down on Time Warner so I pulled up the weather app for him.  We just checked our current conditions and the Dual Doppler Radar.  I like using it on my iPad.

Since I quit my organizational job I have more free time for fun things.

I'm a pretty big geek  and have had an iPhone for quite a while now. If you have any questions, just message me. Glad to hear you're making the jump to smartphone.
