ive avoided dairy except for occasional ice cream (bad i know) and i haven't noticed a change in the way i feel. i was curious why dairy was bad for sjogrens syndrome? can anybody help???

For me personally, I haven't found that cutting out dairy reduces any of my symptoms and I have severe Sjs.

I do however, generally follow guidelines for a low fat/high fiber lifestyle and try to eat fairly healthy overall.  I do eat a fair bit of low fat dairy such as skim milk and skim mozzarella cheese and yogurt on a daily basis as I have low calcium and am on prednisone.

Too much dairy is said to produce alot of phlem for some people, however, again that hasn't been an issue for me.

Creates inflammation and mucous.

for those with yeast issues it can cause it to be worse

I'd be interested in seeing the studies/data on exactly how dairy causes inflammation.  Do you have any links?  Thanks

This is not a study, but extremely interesting!! Explains why gluten, soy, corn, and dairy are bad for many people. Lengthy, but SOOO interesting!

I have never heard that dairy was bad for us. I do know that I drink milk every day and eat ice cream almost every day. The ice cream will cool my very irritated throat down so that the pain is less. Also, when I have mucus in the back of my throat that I can't clear out I will eat a little ice cream or chocolate (M & M's) as it seems like these 2 foods will sort of grab the mucus and make it more easily brought up and out. I am open to most things, but would prefer more scientific studies/facts.  There are articles written about everything...literally every opinion, whether fact based or not.  That's the problem with using the internet these days.  I always look for scientific research.   This article seems focused on 'allergy' as the problem.  Big difference vs something being 'bad' for you.  I appreciate (really) you including this link though.

I personally have not noticed a change in my symptoms with or without dairy.  I have not tried removing gluten from my diet, but haven't seen enough evidence that it would help (unless someone has celiac, which I don't).

Thanks Jazzlover

Dairy is bad for everyone, in my opinion. Anita, what you may not have picked up on is about gluten, soy and casein (dairy) making it difficult for your gut to absorb  nutrients. Also, the food  will ferment in your gut. Doesn't matter if you are allergic or not. Being a celiac is not the same as being "allergic" anyway.

Go to PubMed and browse around.

I have my chocolate milk (skim) every day and my ice cream with hershey's every day.

I beleive it makes me feel better, it is soothing to my mouth. I do feel the phlem that it produces, but even that is better than the constant dryness.

There are so many foods that cause a bitternes in my mouth. Most fruits cause a rough etching feeling through out my mouth.

Nuts, especially pecans, make my mouth hurt, rough, and irritated.

Milk seems to make my mouth and throat feel better.
