Yesterday Oklahoma experienced  tornadoes and earthquakes almost at the same time.  Saturday morning about 2 a.m. we had our first quake and them about 11 that night the big one hit 5.6.  Yesterday afternoon they had tornadoes in SW Oklahoma and just as the rain was starting here in Oklahoma City, we had a 4.7 quake.  These are the largest quakes to hit Oklahoma.  Quakes are the one thing I didn't think I would experience living here. :o :o :o

I don't ever remember hearing about earthquakes in Oklahoma . . "where the wind comes sweeping down the plains" . . . (sorry, can't think of Oklahoma without that song playing in my head  ;) ).

I live in Central Illinois and we're along the New Madrid Fault line.  With all the extreme weather we've experienced worldwide this year - I just hope this fault stays quiet.

Did you feel the quake?  I know one of our members who lives in AR felt your quake.

I always thought growing up that spring and summer were prime tornado season.  It seems any more, they are a year-round phenomenon.   :(

Yes, I did feel all 3.  With SJS you are awake at unusual times this one being 2 in the morning.  The other 2 occurred before bedtime.  I've lived in Oklahoma almost all my life and had never felt one until about 6 years ago when we moved to the house we live in now.  You right about tornadoes being in the spring but yesterday's weather was just like spring weather.  Our house was destroyed in the May 3, 1999 tornado.  Nothing like having your house remodel like that

Madison Granny - how awful that your house was destroyed by a tornado in 1999.   :( Were you home at the time?  Do most homes in Oklahoma have basements or storm shelters?

Have you had very many aftershocks from the earthquakes?

I bet when the skies start getting dark and the weatherman calls for storms - that it must be a bit unnerving to you.

We've had several tornadoes in the area - the closest being 3-1/2 miles down the road a year ago.  It's amazing how much damage can occur in a matter of seconds/minutes.

I've driven through some pretty nasty weather through the years.  It still scares the living daylights out of me to be driving in a storm.  (Our son will be turning 16 next month - I will be a total basket case when he drives on his own and the weather is bad!  I've already told him to pack a change of clothes to keep in his car and if need be, stay put and wait out the weather.)

Yes, I was home alone hiding in the pantry with all the food when it hit.  I was trapped for awhile since the top of the pine tree out back broke off and came thru the dining room window pinning the door shut.  A fireman and National Guard rescured me.  I just had bruised legs.  My next door neighbor was not so lucky.  She looked out of her hiding place and was hit in the face with something.  It killed her instantly.  Her husband and daughter were both fine.  That one was a F-5.  I am still leery of bad weather but now I have to watch it more closely.

Would you believe in Eastern Iowa we actually had a very mild earthquake. I know it was in the 1980s but not sure of the year.

Sorry to hear of all the weather problems in OK. Hope everyone there is ok.

We have these little tremors in MN every so often. Our son experienced a little tremor in the last couple of years. He lives in an area that has come tornado activity quite often. He lives on a little tiny hill with trees on all sides and can only watch the sky looking straight up. They live 2 hours from us and I end up calling them alot to let them know that it is looking bad on radar in his area. They seldom watch TV or have a radio on. They just have 2 noisy kids.

We also live in a tornado belt in MN. We get a lot of wicked weather around here and can stand at our back door and look south and west and see the storm cloudys building up. We had a bad tornado many years ago that was a killer storm in a very large area. Many homes destroyed and about some deaths.

After that storm our Civil Defense in the area was really souped up and we have a storm center in town with all the electronics necessary to keep up with the weather. We also have volunteer weather watchers that cover the whole county. During the storms we will always have a storm watcher sitting on the crossroad south of our place watching and waiting.

These storms are something else. Can't imagine being in a F5 tornado. I bet you have more than a healthy fear of storms and I don't blame you. I guess I am also fearful of floods and think that a flood would be the worst thing ever. The spread of bacteria and the smell would be terrible. Take care.Worrying about tornados while waiting for the first snow of the winter. Irish ;D
