So glad to hear that Ben has reached yet another milestone! It's wonderful news that he has received and can use the electric wheelchair! He has already made so much progress that I have no doubt that he will continue to reach new milestone markers each day! Even small achievements for others are huge ones for him since he has been through so much already.

Still keeping Ben and the rest of the family in my thoughts and prayers....thanks for the update!

So glad Ben is making good progress.  He will continue to reach deep inside to overcome everything, after all he is strong to be in the service to begin with.

I am so glad you are keeping us updated, thank you.

My prayers continue for Ben and his family, for you and your family also.

What a brave young man!  I am still keeping him and his family in my daily prayers and thoughts.

Hoping that the electric wheelchair can help open up his world for him again.

THank you for your continued prayers and good thoughts I understand from my sister that Ben is gradually spending more time in his wheelchair, and has been making friends with some of the other young soliders down the hall way. I'm sure their camaradery is helping them all deal with their horrific injuries.

Ben is still struggling to eat enough - he just doesn't have an appetite. His naso-gastric tube has been removed, and he is being given protein shakes, but it would be wonderful if he could get some pleasure from eating again. Oh, as a smoker, the first opportunity he got to go outside in the chair, he lit a cigarette, and found that he didn't want to smoke it, and it had no appeal for him whatoseever. So, one good result.

God willing, dh and I are going to Birmingham next week to see Ben. I will let you know more then.

Hi Folks

I thought you might see the interview my brother in law gave for our local paper yesterday. It is slightly sensationalised, but then, that's what the media does. My family had resisted the press up to now, as they were too upset, but there had been local speculation about Ben's injuries, so at least they could put the record straight. The press contacted the family after a well-intentioned fundraiser had asked for some publicity - they didn't realize they were giving out information that the family might not be ready to give. However, the article could have been much worse. Just two errors, Ben had only been there two weeks, and the fundraising is for two local military charities, not for Ben.

On a brighter note, my hubby and I spent a weekend in Birmingham and saw Ben. He was very chirpy and cheeky, despite his injuries. God willing, he will be transferred to a rehab unit at the end of the month, once his pelvic brace has been removed. My sister and brother in law will feel that they can finally come back home for good, and get their lives going again.

Thank you again for your support.

To all my friends who have been thinking and sending prayers for Ben, I'm very happy to tell you that he left hospital yesterday and has gone to the military rehab unit. He will have intensive physio and some psych help, and will enjoy the camaradarie of the military colleagues. It has been a heartbreaking few months for him and our family, but we know that Ben wil do whatever he can to get on and have a fulfilling life with his little family.

I just wanted to let you know how important your support has been for us.

God bless

Dear Kathy:

Such a blessing that today we have so many advances in technology for people with serious injuries, like Ben's.

And a blessing that he has a strong spirit and loving support.

He will be able to do so much with patience and hard work.

Keep us posted.

Kathyx - thanks for the update on Ben.  He's been through so much already, may he continue to improve and get stronger with each passing day.

Kathy, I just read through much of this thread and I must say that there have been a lot of miracles taking place in Ben's life. I know he won't feel that way at this point, but just to think how severely he was injured, how dirty his wounds were, etc;, all the surgery he has had, the fact that he is out of the hospital without more complications is really a miracle.

I will continue to hold him and his little family up in prayer as there is still a lot of healing to take place. His life is not over as his maturity level is going to have changed dramatically by this event. This has got to be about as life changing as any experience can get. Thankfully, he still has the ability to love and be loved. Tell him I appreciate what he has sacrificed and can't even express the gratitude I have for men like him who volunteer to serve our country. Irish

Kathy,

Thank you so much for the update.  With all Ben has been through, it seems he is such a determined young man and that will continue to help him immensely.

I think Irish put it so well, and thoughts I would write if I weren't "brain foggy" today. I also will continue to pray for him and his family as he goes on.  It truely does sounds as if his recovery so far has been miraculous.  It sounds as if he will not only receive excellent care in the rehab area but I'll bet he will be a support to other patients while there.
Again, he has given so much in service to our Allied forces.

Take care, dear.  ;)
