Wrong Kind of Calcium

What next, it appears I've been taking the wrong kind of calcium for a year and a half trying to build up my bones.

Apparently, I need calcium citrate because I have acid reflux and take an acid reflux medicine.  I've been taking calcium carbonate which needs acid to absorb in the body which means I've been getting zilch.  Citrate does not need acid and can be taken with or without food.

This could get interesting because every other cacium product I've tried has torn up my stomach.  We will see.

I ordered a Bone Density Builder calcium citrate.  It says it can also be taken while using steroids which I'm not at the moment but probably will be in the future.  By the way it says that it is gentle on the stomach.

My doctor told me to be sure to get calcium citrate because it is absorbed better than calcium carbonate, regardless of what other meds you are taking.  It hasn't bothered my stomach at all.

Get some vitamin k2, make sure its mk7, it will make sure the calcium gets to the bones instead of building up in the arteries.

Clint, you are right aobut the Vitamin K2.  I've been taking a special kind of Vitamin K2 with Advanced K2 Complex for eight months.  It has K1, K2 as M6 and K2 as M7.

Also, purchased a book that is waiting to be read on my iPad that lists the supplements that you can take to strength your bones naturally without taking the Bone Drugs.  It is my goal to be able to quit taking the Fortical.

Calcium citrate will be delivered tomorrow.

Oh no, then I am taking the wrong kind too!  I take protonix for acid reflux.  Just started calcium a few months ago and bought 2 huge bottles.  It does include 1000 mg of D3 which it says helps with absorption.  I checked the bottle and it is calcium carbonate.  Oh well, I am going to finish those bottles and then check with my Dr.

I take calcium citrate because the carbonate form upsets my stomach.  I picture it neutralizing all the stomach acid.  The problem with citrate is that you have to take so many to get the same calcium amount.  I just started taking CitraCal time release.  It's one (medium sized) pill in the morning and it releases all day.  Each pill is 1200 mg ca, which isn't a full dose, but I get other calcium in my food (OJ, milk sub, etc.)

Hi,
I've been using Citrical plus for years, the magnesium is essential for Ca absorption as well.
Also, research states  that only about 400-500 mg can be absorbed at a time, so smaller doses with each meal to complement food sources or time release is better. Boy oh boy the things we have to watch out for!
