Got a shock today

Today my husband was laid off of work after working for the company for 46 years.  They claim they are eliminating his job, my husband said it costs the company to much money to keep him.  So much for loyalty. Granted he is going to be 65 at the end of the month, but seriously they could have found other things for him to do, he was only planning on being there another 2 yrs.

Talk about being upset, I am trying to hold it together so I don't make him more upset, but as I am writting this I am crying, all ready have diarrhea and will probally end up with a huge flare.    The medical will be the part that will get us, have to take out cobra.

Sorry to have vented, but I really needed to talk.  Please keep us in your prayers.

That is very shocking and very disappointing (although not surprising) that his company would do that!  I am so sorry.  As far as insurance, since he will be 65, and I am not 100% sure how this works, but won't he be eligible for medicare?  I do know that you will need to pay for medicare part b, which is out patient services/non-hospitalization, but I would have to guess cheaper than cobra??
I hope this somehow works out for the best!

If I say what I feel my post will be removed for being to political. I am sorry for his loss. There are income guide lines for SSI. You can receive SSI and work part time.

Cricket,
I am so sorry!!!! That must have been a shock and I know it is VERY stressful. Is there any sort of short term medical insurance you can do in leu of or after cobra runs out until Medicare kicks in? (my auto insurance company offer short term medical that is why I ask) I hope that you are able to sail thru this transition. -hugs-hootyhu

(((Cricket))) - I'm so sorry to hear this about your husbands job.   I know how it feels, as it happened to my husband when his company merged with another.  They told the employees nothing was going to change.  Ha . . the day before the merge, they called my husband in and told him he was no longer needed.   It was the last day of the month, so I had enough sense to tell him to fill all the prescriptions we had in the house as we would lose our prescription benefits at midnight.  We had to get cobra too - expensive, but it did help.

It doesn't seem to matter how much an employee gives of their hard work and loyalty to a company, they can terminate you with a blink of an eye, in an instant.  Sad . . . very sad.

It was the first time in my husbands life that he didn't have a job.  It was hard on him and like you, I had to keep strong and not let him know how scared I was as to what would happen now.   After several months of looking and applying for jobs, he got another job and is still working there 10 yrs. later.  A blessing in disguise I guess, as the company he was working for has since folded and is no longer in business.  Although, at the time, it was nothing of a blessing in our eyes.

Take some deep breaths and try to not worry too much.  Worrying won't change anything.  Make sure your husband gets any benefits he has due him from the company.

Again, I'm so sorry . . . . please take care of yourself during this transition time.

Hugs,
Bucky

Oh, I am so sorry...same thing happened to my husband, except he was in the middle of having major surgical procedures done on both his hands...His company also sold, then that company dropped all retirement, 401k everything.  So a lot of us feel your pain and know how hard it is.  You will be faced with a lot of decisions in the next few days.  We wished we would have went with COBRA in the beginning.  We THOUGHT it was expensive , signed up elsewhere and wound up costing us much more, with the costs and then what they do not cover.  with COBRA they usually pick up with what you have goin on and you get some peace of mind in that.  And one less decision to make that you worry about the right choice.

Good Luck and Blessings to you.............-sass-

Dearest Cricket,

Hang in there..............it is such stress and uncertainty.

Keep posting and let us know how you are coping.

Your husband can go on Medicare at 65, then only you will need to COBRA your insurance until you too are 65.

I had to do that when my husband left his job at 67, as I still had four months before I could begin Medicare.

I always wonder why medical and all health insurances are connected to our work.

It makes no sense.

Imagine if the school your kids went to depended on what benefits your company gave you?

And every time you changed jobs your kids had to change schools?

School is a general benefit, and medical care should also be a general benefit, it would make more sense.

Oh well.

Keep us posted.

Hugs

Cricket:

So sorry for the troubles you are experiencing! Sometimes life throws us what we think is more than we can handle, and then magically, we do. I am a great believer in "this too shall pass". I have had to rebuild my life several times and I always think the current mountain is just too big, but then I somehow end up on the other side, going downhill (not in a bad way). So, take deep breaths, know that the love you and your hubby share is the most important thing and nothing will shake that, and hang steady until the mountain fades into the distance.
You are in my thoughts!

Cricket...

That was horrible, rude, but NOT uncommon. Some companies just STINK! I feel so bad for you.

My dad was a radio/TV news broadcaster and they did that to him here. It was horrible seeing my strong "daddy" be so hurt, and frustrated.

I will definitely keep you all in my prayers! Stay strong! Know that your husband's loyalty was much greater, and he should be proud!
