Nancy, you might be interested in the article from a newspaper in my county:

"Equine massage therapy school is one of only 20 in the nation"

http://gazettextra.com/news/2010/dec/29/equine-massage-therapy-school-one-only-20-nation/

The article begins:

"MILTON ? The 13-year-old Arabian horse had an arthritic hind leg.

"It couldn't and didn't want to be ridden or saddled up," said Greg Gage, founder of Therasage Equine Massage Certification School, formerly the Institute of Equine Therasage.

Gage worked on the horse's hip and stretched its hind leg muscles.

"After three to five sessions, I noticed a huge improvement," he said.

Over the years, Gage has worked on horses valued from $500 to $200,000. Some had minor problems, and others were so lame they couldn't tolerate any pressure on a bad leg.

Gage, 39, of Janesville didn't always work on horses.

Twenty years ago, he began a career in human massage, a profession he continues. Gage founded the Institute of Equine Therasage 13 years ago, taking his knowledge of human and animal massage and creating massage for horses.

Here are a few posts from last night about 7:30 Central from Kay:

I really think Tease has a few more days but then I was just watchng her and she was kicking the stall wall. Did anyone else see that?

I still feel like crap. Finally made myself get out and go to the store (made russ drive) and after just a trip to the store was exhausted and coughing again. Ughhh.

Big storm getting ready to hit and Im home alone

------

She seemed ok with the last couple storms. This one is supposed to be pretty severe. I hope the cam holds in

She backed up to the wall and then was just kicking the wall over and over. Crazy mare!

------

oops her top door came open and the other mares are bugging her. Rusty is going to close it

This mare seems preety calm but I guess the owners were in there a bit ago, wrapped the males tail and maybe saw something under there that we can't!

I just checkd in on teaste..still preggers, of course, but restless. Walking, walking, walking...

Bucky

Shoot - I can't see a thing on Tease.  The camera is real funky and distorted - like it's raining on it.

Hope she doesn't have her baby until the cam is up and running right.

The camera is working now, Bucky.  Someone is cleaning the stall, and our Tease is probably outside terrorizing the other horses. ;D

It's not working again.   :'(  Unless that spider is spread out across the whole cam . . ewwww!  It looks black - but, you can "kinda" see something moving around.  It's weird.

Rats!  Maybe it's a result of the storms they've been having.  Sure hope they get it fixed soon.

On the other hand, if it's a spider...well, it's not so itsy bitsy is it?  :o

I'm starting to make out Tease on the cam now.

-----

A friend on my quilting board wrote this today and gave me permission to quote her:

I was readingthe Mare Stare message board, the topic regarding calling the owners when we think we notice something odd or a mare in labor. It brought back a few memories

I know that the calls I have made in the last 4 mare stare seasons have all been appreciated. Some of the calls were humorous

My first call followed the request, "if you see her down, please call" and I did! She was sleeping

My 2nd call was to the same owner, it took me a minute to get up the nerve to push the last number. I had already woke her up once on a false alarm. But I took a deep breath and pushed it! The owner didn't even get the chance to even say "hello" as I was saying over and over "the baby is coming!! the baby is coming!!"
The owner must have dropped the phone without thinking to end the call... I could hear voices (tv?) in the background and within a minute she was in the stall, breaking the bag. The mare delivered in record time less than 5 minutes from laying down to the foal being out. No rolling or other signs leading up to it. This mare had a history of losing foals who couldn't get out in time. It was awesome that DS was at work (graveyard shift) and I was at his home watching mares waiting for him to get off of work.
I received a very nice return phone call from the owner She was sooo appreciative and apologetic for throwing the phone down without so much as a thank you or good bye LOL

There have been many other calls that I have made. The owners have not said a word, yelled thank you and hung up, asked me questions as they ran out to the stall, etc...

Only one was rather cranky LOL a shift worker who had just come off a grueling schedule She called me back and apologized for being cranky/rude upon answering the phone.

Our calls are important as we all know, the call made to the owners the other day who were away from home for example. What piece of mind they were given by 2 of our team members

Do not be discouraged if you get a odd/strange/less than pleasant voice answering Remember many of these owners are sleep deprived, right Kay?
Each owner is always grateful to get out to the stall in time or hear us describe what is happening on the cam.

I have called on a few false alarms, and received call backs on them too. They were thankful and assured me that they were grateful that I was watching and cared enough to call.
Several of us have called and been told it wasn't a foal coming out... it was the mares tale we were seeing ROFLMBO thankfully they all had a GREAT sense of humor So if you hear mention of "tail foalings" now you know the origin of this saying

Please don't hesitate to call... it can be scary/intimidating to pick up the phone and dial, just take a deep breath, you can do it
