Temp is 101.2 which is great!

She seems more pouty than normal with the shots today so I am watching closely. I could not get the last one in ugh. We are going to let her rest and give it at noon. The dang syringe broke on me. So hard to get that much penicillin thru such a small needle.

Stools are much better

Oh forgot to say Sally said no hand walk this morning as it is much hotter right now then what was predicted. Humidity is horrible.

Renewing prayers...posted a few minutes agp:

Sallys farm helper is going to come help me take her temp. I suspect from how shes acting that the fever is back. Dr masterson (dr mueses boss) is coming later to look her over.

Just a thought:  I wonder if the fan(s) blowing on Annie are bothering her?  Tease's mane is sure blowing from the fan - can imagine what it's like on Annie.  Just like a little newborn human baby, we wouldn't have a fan blowing directly on them when they're that little.  (I know it's hot and they are just trying to cool the girls off.)

I just love little Annie's tail swishing back and forth . . . so cute!   ;D  Hang in there little girl - hope your fever goes away and you start to feel better.

Kay reports

Fever is 103 now

It was a little over 105 last night. Bad bad. Fever isnt such a big deal in a mature horse but a really big deal in a foal that is just a couple days old. 105 can put them in seizures.

I gave more meds. I suspect dr [NB---dr. puported to be the best foal care specialist in the area] will be awhile with all the other calls they had... I told Sally to bring her out as Annie deserves the chance.

Kay also mentioned earlier today:

When she lays all stretched out it means shes feeling good. When shes all curled up (legs pulled to belly) shes not feeling good so she goes into foal fetal position."  [Kay was responding to her good QB aunties nursing notes fron over night.]

Also...

Yesterday they said no...[to special cooling measure such as a water or alcohol bath]...as they were worried about shock if we cool her down too fast. In a mature horse I would for sure do that but she is just too young and new for those measures.

We will probably see her perk up for a bit once the meds kick in but then as we know have seen it shoots back up.

The issues is it is a persistent high fever

I'm afraid our news from Kay is very bad at this time...making this post here through my tears...

--------------

This is the hardest post I have ever made here, but I have to let you all know. Dr...called and had a heart to heart with me. She said Sally could not bear to tell me that Annies chances of making it are very slim.

She has been on some of the strongest drugs known to fight sepsis and the fact that she is not responding does not bode well.

She said there was no sense in coming here as there is nothing else that can be done at the farm (except what we are currently doing)

She said we can certainly keep trying but she felt she had to be honest with me.

------------

I so appreciate her honestly but it came as a terrible blow because I did not know her chances were so slim.

We will continue treating her until Annie either gets better or gives up.

Im so scared because it looks to me like she is not bouncing back anymore like she did yesterday.

I am still praying for a miracle but I had to let you all know how serious it is.

I hope you all understand.

Noooooooooooooooo . . . I wish the vet would still come.

I wished I lived closer - I would go in there and sit with little Annie.  (not that it would help, but it would feel like I am doing something besides watching her from 500 miles away.)

Annie is still nursing.  I will continue to pray for our little girl - that she will defy the odds and pull through this.

Come on Annie . . you had a rough start in life, but we're not giving up on you!!

I'm sure all the rain and then heat wave that has been in the area hasn't helped matters either.

Praying for a miracle for our Annie . . . .

This is just so sad.......She is a little fighter, she might still turn the corner and pull through.  She did get all the antibodies from the colostrum and the vet said her blood levels were good.  So maybe her little immune system will kick in and start fighting this infection...Still praying hard for her.

I checked back in and see that Kay posted:

I think Annie is trying to rally. Dr Meuse is stepping back in and says he has a new plan. He is going to call when he finishes calls. I am on pins and needles.

I was just getting ready to go out and syringe her but held off when i saw her playing. What a joy she is.

Trying to keep you all updated but have been on the hphoe

I see that Annie is scrampering around!  Prayers for you little Annie Joy and for all your family!

This is so very sad. :'(  I feel so awful for everyone at Baxters Painted Pasture...for Kay...for Tease...for Annie.

Annie is up and about right now, but her hind leg looks stiff. Isn't it amazing how attached we have all become of these beautiful creatures?  Prayers for everyone.

News overnight is that little Annie Joy was been hanging in there...

I wrote this morning on QB...

Morning all.  Tease and Annie Joy were resting when I pulled t6he cam up about an hour ago.  I see nursing then exploring now :)

So very glad you got some good news Kay.  We know she isn't out of the woods by any matter of means so our prayers for all are continuing strong...

Kay had written...

On Marestare, ten pm barn time (ET)

Thank you all so much. Fever is gone again. You can always tell because that is when she gets up playing again. But you can see her limping and the swollen hock.

We are trying to come up with a new plan with Dr muese to treat her at his place to flush the hock.

I'm praying she will hold in there till sat and not get worse

He really wants to wait till shes had 5 full days of antibiotics before he cuts the leg open to drain it

She is such a fighter

And on QB..

Fever is gone again

dr called he just got off work and then i had to run to sallys and get more meds.

His plan is to leave her meds alone till sat and then switch them.

If she improves or at least does not get worse by sat he will operate on her leg at his place. Its not ideal but it gives her a chance.

He is very smitten with her and said if she is willing to fight so is he...he is willing to try.

God bless him.

Over the past few hours, Annie has even seemed frisky at times, doing some good scrimpering about.

I wrote on QB...

Kay, someone was asking (was that you ____?) about the surgery your vet may do. Is he hoping that it will be draining a fluid absess, something that is encapsulated (enclosed in a capsule or sheath of tissue)? Or does he believe it has settled into tissues or bone where debridement would be necessary, that is, cutting out the infected tissue? Maybe these are questions that don't have any answers right now or ones you prefer not to go into. Please excuse me if these are inappropriate questions.

Kay wrote this in response...

Gm ladies

The dr will cut that joint open and drain all of the infection. Im a little nervous about bringing her home after as this is not a sterile environment for an open wound but I have to try. Especially with the constant barn flooding the stall shes in is really the only decent stall we have. I dont have all the details yet becaue he and sally were so tired and didnt get off horse calls till 11 pm
