Kay posted these 2 posts on Facebook:

" Tease and Annie are reuntied but shes still not quite nursing. Good news is her snap test came back great. Bad news is shes septic (infection) I cannot thank Dr Muse and Sally ever enough for what they did tonight. They went so far above and beyond what any vet would do and I am so thankful. Praying Annie will nurse soon and get thru this infection "

and then later

"All of your prayers are working as Annie can now latch on and nurse! Still have to tie Tease but we are making progress"

Still praying!

Thank you Nancy for posting a interim update!  We all much appreciated that.

I have a lengthy update to post here  (might have to do in in two parts.  Tease IS remaining back with little Annie and has allowed her to get some good, long drinks in independently!!! :D  The little girl does have an infection though...Kay is taking her temp right now for a follow up report to the vet.

------------

http://www.marestare.com/fcam.php?alias=silvercreek Athena - tail is wrapped, udder full and dripping. according to report yesterday evening

Last night, 11 pm barn time....

Just came in and omg dr muse is the best vet ever. this man spent 4 hours trying to teach this filly how to nurse. tease is back with her and much better. just praying it lasts. shes heavily sedated.

good news: snap test shows she got full colostrum

Bad news: shees gone septic

Please pray with me that she can turn this corner. shes almost nursing but not quite. I have to withhold food for another 1.5 hrrs to make her really hungry.

Im a wreck

annie is septic meaning shes fighting an infection and running a fever. I didnt know in all my years that anytime a mare is overdue or has a dystocia you should immediately give antibiotics. had never heard that in all my years

I keep telling myself we have been very blessed with a lot of great foaling years with no major issues so it was bound to happen. Annie is such a fighter. Dr said he was cautiously optimistic especially if we can get her nursing

................

[nursing issues, Kay was advised not to intervene at this time..."sally text3ed and said not to go out yet. this is killing me. we had tease all settled so she would let the baby try to nruse and now shes turning again."]

..............

About 12:15 am barn time

She nursed she nursed she nursed. did i say she nurssed? omg i am so happy. I had to tie tease but she finally let her and she got a really good drink. i am praying this happens again without me helping

what would i do without you all? I dont know how I can ever repay you guys for your love and support. Its so nice to have someone to talk to at 1230 am!

hopefully she will nurse on her own now, beat this infection and go onto being a spoiled filly
[nursing occurring again 15 mins later! "nursed again but i had to tie tease again. i sure hope that stops."]

[in response to Qs:  "Tease is 36" and I suspect Annie is about 22" and about 20 lbs. The vet was so amazed by her. Its his first mini to treat. He normally works horse race farm barns and hunter jumpr horses. They had their picture taken with Annie. In all my years he is the most amazing vet I have ever had. I always talk to him down at sallys but had never used him till now", "Im really not sure? They seem much more bonded than before but when Annie tries to nurse tease turns. When I tie her she immediately relaxes and doesnt fight it at all. Its so strange.", "marestare asked me not to post the new cam addy on any forums as it makes it too easy for everyone to get it. someone on marestare was apparently pissed when we made the cam private.

I am hoping pms will get around  :) I just dont have time to pm eveyrone as I am trying to watch the cam i'm so sorry."]

1 am

its so strange because when I tie her she totally relaxes and is even affectionate. As soon as I untie her shes grumpy again. strangest thing I have ever seen. Annie almost got to nurse a few mins ago. I am going to give them more time before i help again

I keep hoping they will nurse wihtout me and then I can sleep a couple hours

i keep trying to just hold her halter to let the filly nurse (instead of tying) but she wont do that. So strange

Second half of post...

2 am

we are getting pretty close! I even let go of her and she continued to let annie nurse. I am going to lay down for 2 hrs as my eyes are killing me. I forgot to do my eye drops in all teh chaos.

shes drank enough in the last 3 hrs that she should be good for 2-3 and maybe tease will let her nurse without me

[nearly 4 am...Tease observed allowing some unassisted nursing...]

oh thank goodness. Each time should get easier. dang that 2 hrs of sleep felt good I have to say. thank you guys so much for watching and posting

4;15 [responding to an offer to watch..."i could just kiss you. if you are sure you dont mind I am going to take you up on it. My whole body hurts. I will take my cell to bed with me XXXXXXXXX

If you get worried just call and wake me up. If I could get just a couple more I might feel human."]

[about quarter to 7...long drinking session observed!  :)]

7 am

Thank you for watching! I should have said soemthing about her fainting but I forgot as she hasnt done it in awhile. Its scary when you first see it. They just go limp and then down.

Im so just happy that they worked it out. I think the more she nurses the better they will get at it.

I have to take her temp and now I cant find my thermometer ughh

-------------

Life is so good right now!! I have to find this dang thermometer lol. Gai the kids used to say "thats not the one you used on the horses or dogs is it?" Every time I would take their temp. But honestly I also have thrown some out when I wasnt sure LOL.

If you see how Annie is laying now all stretched out doc said that is how you want to see them. When they curl up in a ball he says its because they are sick and not feeling good. I never in all my years knew that.

oh poor bailey! She got so upset when the vet kicked her out of Annies stall. She kept coming to the outside door crying for Annie. I felt so bad. The vet said Bailey is worth her weight in gold and I so feel the same way.

We had not given Bailey the shot yet. We didnt want to put her through that if she wouldnt let Annie nurse. She would have though. I would put Annie right at her udder and Bailey would stand there patiently. I am so glad now we didnt give the shot yet.

And actually they gave that same shot (oxytocin) to Tease. It was a shot in the dark as Sally had read that it can make mares more maternal by releasing more hormones. I do think it helped.

about quarter to 8...

Tease is really over doing the butt licking. But hey at least shes letting her nurse. Found the thermometer! As soon as Ruby gets up to help I will go take it. I will have to tie Tease to do it I am sure. Please please let it be normal!

[more independent nursing :D]

kays say [regarding mare licking foals bottom while filly nurse]...is too stimulate them to nurse and poop. She is over doing it but I will take it.

[Regarding b & w pic]...I will take color photos this morning after I take her temp. She is such a beautiful little filly and looks much better in color! I wont be able to get a really good one until she can go outside (stall pics are never very good due to lighting) but I will try!

Doc doesnt want her going outside until we are sure the infection is under control.

Kay writes about babe getting a shot a few minutes ago and temp taken...

Shoot it froze up. Probably good that you didnt see us give her a shot as she fainted again. Shes a little stressed from the shot etc but I think she will bounce right back.

NO FEVER

Another update from Kay...
I have never in all my years seen a vet this dedicated that loved horses as much as I do. I almost cry thinking about it. I was so impressed. Sally said "now you know why I work for him!"

What a great day this is shaping up to be.

I do wish she would stop curling up but I suspect the stress of the shot, temp taking etc stressed her...[now she's laying out]

Awwww..ain't that snuggle pic so great!  :D

Here's Kays post on Marestare from about 6:30 am...

QuoteHi All

I have such good news. Annie and Tease are back together and Annie is finally nursing and Tease is finally letting her. I cannot say enough good about my NEW vet. he spent 4 hours here trying to teach both annie and tease how to nurse and would not give up. At one point I was bawling like a baby and he told me he would not give up. I have never seen a vet go so over and beyond. He finally left at 11 pm.  By midnight Annie finally nursed but I had to tie Tease. By 2 am I didnt have to tie Tease I could just hold her. By 3 am they were doing it alone.

Good news is snap test was perfect

Bad news is she is running a fever and septic. He thinks she was born septic and this could be the root of everything that happened but we will never really know. Because her IGG is so good and we got her on antibiotics so fast he thinks we will have a good outcome.

After I take her temp and give her shots I will put the cam back live

Thank you all so much for your prayers

{Note from Mary Ann---no pulbic cam as yet, I just checked}

Bucky

Mary Ann - thanks for all the updates.  I pray everything continues to improve hour by hour, day by day.

Watching all the action as a spectator from 500 miles away, you feel so helpless that you can't just jump in and help.

I'm sure Kay is so sleep deprived trying to keep up.  Especially, since she's been sick recently.  That lady needs a vacation!!   ;D

It's awesome how much time the vet spent trying to "teach" Tease and Annie how to nurse.  This man truly loves his job and is an asset to both humans and the animal world.  Hugs to you Mr. Vet!!   :D

Wishing sunshine and happy frolics out in the pasture for Tease and Annie and a much needed rest in assisting births for the wonderful folks at Baxters Painted Pasture.

Hugs to you all,
Bucky

Kay posted on Marestare about 15 minutes ago...

This is such an awesome day! Her fever is gone! I have to be cautious though as the vet said to take it again later to be sure it doesnt spike in the afternoon.

I have asked Heather to put the cam back so when she has time you should all be able to see them again. They were sleeping together with Tease resting her head on Annie and I was in tears again.

Please be warned she is a fainting foal! Do not be alarmed if you see her faint. But if she faints and doesnt wake up quickly and I am not in there a post would be nice.

We have to give shots and take temps thru out the day so you will see her faint if you see us doing a shot. I hate giving foals shots!! But I know it has to be done. Shes just so tiny its hard to find that good spot.

[Note from Mary Ann...Marestare hasn't completed getting the public cam up yet I see...or don't see  :D]

I wish annie would run around the stall and play. Thats the only thing I am not seeing that I would like to.

Vet just called and said if the fever stays gone all day she can go outside tomorrow. Tease will be so happy. When foals are stalled too long they nurse too much out of boredom and the poor mares go crazy.

-------------------

I think due to stall boredom annie is nursing too much so Tease is keeping her in check. This is what I hate about keeping them stalled so long but the vet doesnt want her out until she goes 24 hrs with no fever. She straining to poop again but I didnt see anything come out?? I used 3 enemas on her so I have to run and get more. I was hoping Russ could bring them home as my eye is really bad and Im not sure i can drive.

The foal gets bored and just nurses constantly. She really doesnt need to nurse every few mins.

Here's an article on horse markings in Wiki...I googled to find out what a 'medicine hat' was and it is mentioned here. I haven't begun to read the whole article yet...but I think this city girl will enjoy it.

Thanks so much! [on recieiving info on home made horsey enema solutions  :D] Abby is at the store so as soon as she gets back shes going to help me. I am going to run out and let them play in the middle of the barn while I clean their stall. That baby is making her nuts. She maybe nursing too much because shes constipated again. Letting her in the middle should distract her until abby gets here
