Rusty and Kay have cam off, not sure for how long.
It appears they will hold Tease to 'insist' that she nurses the foal a bit (something that usually a time or two of doing will accomplish the the good nursing pattern goal---I seen Kay write that before.)

hi all

i was able to milk tease but we had to bottle feed the filly again. We are very close to getting Tease to let her nurse but the issue now is the foal is a bit if a dummy [NOTE from Mary Ann---this is a technical term that refers to foals that have problems with fainting for the first 5 to 8 hours after birth.  They can be groggy too, have problems nursing---and pass out if you rub their necks!]. I think it will take 8 hours for her to completely wake up and nurse. Just trying to keep enough colostrum in her until then.

We tied tease and she was going to let the filly nurse but she was sucking on everything but tease. typical dummy foal. We will be going out every 2 hours until she wakes up and hopefully starts nursing.

Tease was pretty good this time about being milked so hopefully she will contine

---

Russ and I have decided to just stay up all night. Ruby wants to help bless her heart but Tease hates her and Ruby doesnt have the experience.

I think if we keep milking tease and feeding the filly she will wake up at about 4 or 5 am and nurse. That has been my experience in the past

What a way to end foaling season.

I'll continue to leave 'puter windows open for here and Tease's cam but I may need to lay down sooner rather tham later.  :D  I'll check in now and again very likely. Happy BD little Baxter filly...you're the one we've awaited for so long!  :) :-*

Here are the postings from Kay...

From Kay, all times at her barn (ET)

6.6.2011, 1:40 a.m.

Thank you guys so much for your support. We are going to head out and feed again. Have to get 60 ccs of colostrum in within 8 hours adn we are only at 40.

2:30

That was a disaster. Tease would not let us milk her this time. I am afraid we may have to separate them. Gave her another sedative but we cant keep doing that.

2:42

I really think it is mostly due to a very painful delivery. I know most mares that reject foals had a hard delivery. I dont know if you could tell watching the cam but that head was stuck so badly and in a very bad spot. We had to really manipulate and pull and Tease was in a lot of pain.

I suspect we will have a foal living in the house for a few days until she can go longer between feeding.

Poor tease is grinding her teeth and just very stressed.

3:47

Well this just isnt working. Tease is getting worse and I cant keep doping her up. Shes had 3 pain shots in 6 hours. Its getting too dangerous for all of us.

Poor tease is still grinding her teeth and just very stressed.

When russ wakes up we will have to fix something in the house so we can feed her round the clock.

Im sad but trying to remain optimistic that the filly will make it.

Yes my back is now offically killing me...

4:05

We tried twitching, holding a leg up, twitching and holding a leg up at the same time etc.

So odd as at 2 am we were able to milk her and almost got her to let the filly nurse. So I thought the next feeding would be easier. But it was much worse. That time we did all of the above and still couldnt milk her.

I am wondering if Bailey [Note from Mary Ann: ?neighbor's mare who recently lost a foal?] will take her. Not ideal but at least she would have a mare.

We could try star but not sure she would go for it

Patches probably would but the fillys too small to reach her

4:37

Yes she is a medicine hat just like her momma. They look like twins only the filly is black & white. So adorable I cant even tell you.

Kyle will be home around 630 am so maybe with another helper? Id like to try one more time.

Seems like the sedative works for about 30 mins and thats it. ughh

It was a mess trying to twitch and hold a leg!...

Rusty is hurting bad. Not good for his RA I am sure. Hes sleeping for awhile

6:05

I was watching them in my room on my phone so I could stretch my back out.

When Tease was laying down I thought that filly might just get some nursing in. Dang it.

...we have given Tease 3 sedatives and she still wont let the filly nurse. Initially we could milk tease but now cant even do that.

7:14

We are putting her with Bailey to see if they bond. Bailey loves foals and this will help comfort the filly. Sally said its just too dangerous to keep trying. So odd that Tease wants her baby but doesnt want her baby. Thats a new one on me.

If it looks like it will work we will give Bailey shots to bring her milk in. But even if it doesnt work she will stay with Bailey so she has a mare to show her how to be a horse.

My heart is broken for Tease. She just doesnt understand. We will continue bottle feeding and buy milk replacer and pray the filly makes it.

7:52

ugh cam keeps crashing

8:06

She hasnt totally bonded with her yet but was very interested in her. Im going to take a cat nap and stretch my back while russ feeds her and watches her

Our prayers continue....

Kay writes,,

hi all

I got a little nap and now russ is out buying foal formula powder.

Whether she makes it really depends if we got enough colostrum into her. I am praying so hard we did. We should know by tomarrow morning or today if I can get a test done. I am trying to find a vet to do a snap test but cant locate one. One is on vacation and mine has a broken foot that I didnt know about till I called her last night. I put yet another call into Sally and Dr muse. But they are on an ER call over an hour away.

Tease is not great but shes ok. Shes settling down some. I just think the traumatic birth made her reject the foal. Even though she didnt want us to touch her she didnt want to touch her either. This is semi common in maiden mares with hard births.

We will probably continue with a bottle today and then teach her to drink from a shallow dish. We have been trying to find a bucket to fit with a nipple but not having any luck.

Im so glad Bailey is being sweet to her. Sally was trying to see if she can bring me a shot to bring baileys milk in. We could milk patches but Dr muse feels her milk will not be high quality since Shammy is almost 3 months old.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and support.

Im not going to kid you she may not make it but we are doing everything we can.

Such a sweet baby Baxter. So sorry for the difficulties at birth. Prayers for Tease and baby.
It would be such a sweet experience to sit down in that stall and love on that baby.
Respect for Kay and others working for the good of all. Prayers of strength for them!

I wonder if horses would respond to soothing music, to relax by?

Thanks Photo for sharing this experience with us.

Never knew a foal could have fainting problems. I have been watching and it is easy to see, she just spontaneously drops down. I thought she was just deciding to rest awhile.
