Watch your receipts . . .

Hi - I posted on this topic back in Nov. '09.  It still applies today.

I went to the grocery store this morning to pick up a few groceries for the upcoming winter storm we have coming this evening.   ::) I made my purchases, took them to the car, and then looked at my receipt.  Good thing I did . . . they overcharged me $8.10 for a ham I bought.  So, I get the ham out of the trunk of the car and march back inside the store.  They refunded me my money.

This store has a policy if they overcharge you, you get the difference back and the item free.  I asked about this.  The manager told me on Thursdays, they have until 12 noon to make any price adjustments in their system, so the item is not free.  (Their new sales ad starts on a Thursday.  Although, this item I bought, was not on the sales ad.)  Grrrrrrrrr . . . was hoping to get it free - if I had shopped there this afternoon, it would have been.  Oh well, at least I got my $8.10 back!!

In this day and age where everything is going up and up in price . . . be sure and check your receipts!

Bucky,

I always watch items being rung up and my recpts. Just last night I went to a local supermarket. They had tons of sales. I purchased 3 packages of Keebler products. Sign said 5/$5.00. When I got the the register, I had 3 and they charged me double. He said, "You have to buy 5." The sign did not say that.  >:( He told me that I was about the 50th customer that day to say that! He agreed with me that it was confusing. At "WM" if an item is incorrectly priced and you are charged, and under $5, it is free.

UPDATING my story!  ;D

Went back to the same store to get more deals to put away from spring. In line and one item rang up wrong. (Twice the cost wrong!), so they were checking on it. I noticed a woman behind me sighing a lot. I just smiled at her as if to say, "sorry." After a minute, (and after the manager went for the price) she said, "Just don't buy it." (It was such a  great deal of multiple items (same items) that I didn't want to lose them before the sale ended.) I turned to her, and said, " Excuse me?"...(she repeated the statement) and I said, "Why are you getting involved in my transaction?" (I was being very nice, very patience with her even though my feet were about to fall off!) She said, "Because you are holding up the line." (She was very condescending.) I said, "They have the prices incorrect. I don't care."  She said, with a huge, manical grin, "Well, I do!" Then, she turned and told anyone in the OTHER lanes, and the cashier what a horrible person I was for not having them put the items back, and that I "HAD to have them..." ...Omg...Anyway, you know what?....when I am behind someone that is having an issue with wrong prices/items...I wait. I exercise patience. JMHO.  ;)

I wanted to rub my Sjogren's all over her!

I learned years ago going to the grocery store with my folks to check the prices that are being rung up for items.
So far, I thought I was the only one that watched what the register rung up.
Glad I am not alone!!!!!  ;) :D

I went to the grocery store this morning - got my things, checked out and looked at my receipt.  I mentioned to the clerk that the 8-pc. fried chicken I got rang up $5.99, but the shelf sticker said $4.99.  She goes to check.  Yep, someone forgot to take the sticker down from LAST WEEK.

So, I head to the customer service desk, and they refund me my money and I get the 8-pc. chicken FREE.   ;D

Woohoo, thank you Kroger's for my evening meal for free.

I'm telling ya . . . you've got to watch those receipts!!

Grrr...this is just so frustrating!  First, like people have time to sit and watch every single item ring up or to study their receipt afterward.  I have a hard enough time just getting my stuff onto the belt, watching my purse, answering the call from my husband reminding me to pick up soda, and telling my kid for the 10th time "NO you can't have a candy bar!"  Then you have to fight with them about how much you got charged!  And THAT is assuming the clerk was friendly in the first place!

I think any time you have to make a special trip back to the store to get your money back it should be free!!

THEN it frustrates me when I find myself apologizing to the clerk or the person behind me because I'm holding up the line.  LOOK PEOPLE - it is not me, the store should have their prices straight - you should be mad at them!!!

I too watch the register ring up my items! I don't apologize to people behind me because if the situation was reversed they would want their money too!!!!! If someone was making such a big stink behind me they can go to the only other line that has a cashier at it, (WM is famous for 100 check out lines and only 2 open!). We work hard for our money and we shouldn't have to 'ask for it back' due to errors, they should keep their items updated in the stores:) Happy Shopping.

Then how about the chicken breasts that are spoiled when you get home and want to cook them for supper. Do I feel in the mood to take them back at that time. No way cause I live out in the country. I hate the way they put meat out that is really old. They are just hoping you can't see or smell or don't take the time to come back.

And how about the new program on cable about coupon shoppers. How in the heck do they ring up over $1000 groceries and pay 50 dollars or so. I guess they know things I don't. Irish ;D

Bucky

Thank you once again, Kroger's.  (Our local Kroger grocery store is notorious for ringing up items at the wrong prices.)  This morning, I ran to the store to get a few things.  Bought a one pound bag of whole cashews.  The sign said 2/$5.00 (which is a really good price for cashews).  I was watching as the cashier scanned it, it came up $5.99.  I could have said something then, but . . . I waited, and then went to the Customer Service desk afterwards.

The cashier would have had to do a price check, blah, blah, blah.  This way, by going to Customer Service, I don't hold anyone else up in line.  Plus, they would know if the price is right or not.

Well, I tell the guy in Customer Service about the 2/$5.00 sign and he rolls his eyes.  ::) Although, not at me!  I guess the fruit department has been told about these wrong price stickers in their department before.  So, I get my money for the cashews refunded to me, and I get the bag of cashews for FREE!  Now I wish I had picked up two bags of them!   :D

I have gotten so many free items from this store - all because of wrong price stickers on the shelves.  The policy is (at least in our store), they have to charge you what the shelf sticker says if you go through the register and catch it.  If you go to Customer Service, they refund you what you paid and the item is then FREE to you.  The only exception is if it is the new sale day ad (they have new ads on Thursdays), they have until 12 noon to make any changes in pricing.

I'm telling you . . . you have GOT to watch your receipts.  Food prices are ridiculous as they are without the stores charging you even more!   ::)

I always check the receipt; my husband thinks I'm a bit "anal" but I don't care.  With me on SS Disability now and the way his job works people sometimes 5 days a week and some 3-4 days, we need to make every penny count.
I save grocery receipts to see when the sales come around. I've gotten a good handle on it.

He also had laughed at me a bit because I've become a coupon-clipper.  I even made a small binder and organized them, then I match them up to the sale ads to get the best deals.  I'm nowhere close to the people on the Extreme Couponing show, but when I saved $18 off our $60 of groceries he was pretty impressed.  ;)  I also go to the store on Sunday evening.  It's amazing what's marked down in fresh meats and fish at the end of the weekend.  Last week I found a huge piece of fresh salmon for $3.50 because it had Sunday's date on it.

I told him this was "my job" now.  My check will be the same every month, and it's a third smaller than my salary was, but I can do my best to stretch our income as far as possible!   ;D

Thanks, Bucky!  ;D

Ya know, I was one of those people who joked about my father being a penny-pincher when I was much younger.  My parents weren't terribly frugile, but they always lived below their means and it did them well.  What a concept these days, huh?  :D

Guess I'm more like Dad than I thought.

Bucky

I got another freebie today!!   ;D

I've gotten in the habit of noting prices on my shopping list so I can check the receipt against my list.  Well, today they rang up the Rice Krispie bars at $5.19 and the shelf price was $4.62.  You might think, big deal, .57c difference - load up your groceries and head home.

Nope, not me!!   ;)  My theory is, if they overcharge me 57c, and everybody else who buys this product, think of the profit they've made off of us for the day/week when we don't say anything.  The stores are getting richer by nickel and dimeing (however you spell that  ::)) us and nobody saying anything.

So, even though it took several minutes of MY time waiting for the manager to do a price check at Customer Service - I got my $5.19 refunded to me, and a FREE box of Rice Krispie bars.   ;D

I totally agree with you Meld when you said, "we need to make every penny count"!

Buyer beware . . . . watch your receipts!!

Hey Bucky,

I was going to tell you I wish we had a Kroger's here so I could get some free deals.  However, I guess I got that deal the other day, but didn't realize it.  Shopped at Publix, got home and looked at my receipt and they had charged me for Asian pears ($$) instead of golden apples.  The next time I went to Publix I told Customer Service expecting them to refund me the difference.  Instead they gave me my whole $5 back.
