Hi there,

I was wondering which books, movies, tv shows perk you up when you are having a flare or a challenging day?

I've been ready Thich Nhat Hahn "Anger" it really is helpful looking at my own anger and how to realize other folks are suffering too.  It isn't religious or anything.  He also encourages Mindfulness and Meditating.

Would love to hear about your choices!

Cheers,
Dolly

PS I love Mystery series on PBS and Historical / Period films

An Idiot Abroad on the Science channel has turned out to be quite funny.  It's in the vein of Micheal Palin's BBC travel series.

I listen to fantasy book series like: Wheel of time, Sword of Truth, Eragon, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Disc World, Star Wars, and Star Trek. I try to watch comedies on video. We used to do so much traveling that the books on tape were easier than constantly changing radio stations. I use the videos, and TV programs when home alone or trying to be quiet while Jan is sleeping. They are nice background when I am posting here, doing email, or doing data entry. With the remote, they are easy to mute if I get a phone or skype call.

What a lovely discussion thread!  I use audio books when I'm dozing/resting:  children's classics like 'The Railway Children', 'Secret Garden' and 'Goodnight Mr Tom' as well as Jane Austen's books and some detective stories although they don't work so well because I'm usually asleep half way through the tape!

I love watching DVDs and videos of BBC costume dramas, and old favourite films.  Some odd films cheer me up:  Runaway Jury, Speed, Bourne Trilogy, The Sting.

Looking forward to hearing other people's ideas.

I really love British authors and telly.  If you haven't seen the Midsomers Murders detective series - you must!  My hubby and I call it Midsomers Massacres because brit authors can never kill of just ONE victim.

Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie detective series is good.  It starts with Case Histories.  Stellar writing.  She uses a writing device where one chapter is presented from the detective pov and the next chapter is the same scene from his clients pov.  I didn't get it at first.  Thought brain fog made me read the chapter over or it was a print error.  Once you catch on it's pretty funny.

If you like mystery the movie Hot Fuzz is totally under rated.  They tried to sell it as a Police Academy dumb humor but it a great satire on the murder mystery/police genre.  I love it.  And Simon Pegg is a cutie.

A great American detective series is Nero Wolfe.  It was made when A&E was still the arts and entertainment channel.  Production quality equal to BBC.  Ah, those were the days.

I read a series of books "The City of Ember" was the first one.  I think they were possibly young adult books, but I loved them.  They had very uplifting moments in them.

They're about a city that was built underground before a large war was started.  They're by Jeanne DuPrau

Thanks for the new ideas!  I like Harry P, Star Wars and Star Trek.  I will look into the Wheel of time, Sword of Truth, Eragon, Percy Jackson.  I've been considering doing a online book swap but wonder if I'd get around to actually swapping LOL.  Thanks!

I haven't watched Midsomer "Massacres" yet LOL  Will have to rent them!  I was watching Rosemary and Thyme but they seemed very similar after awhile.
New to Kate Atkins and Nero Wolfe - thanks!!!
I love Simon Pegg stuff especially Hot Fuzz.  It has sort of a retro quality to it with the humor - what was that Cary Grant film - not Bell book and Candle - where he is at his old aunt's home??? Anyway love SP! He and Nick have a new film coming out I heard on a talk show :)

The City of Ember sounds cool. Seems very Ray Bradbury.  Will check out Jeanne DuPrau!

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorite screw ball comedies. Bell, Book and Candle is Jimmy Stewart.
