fentanyl and ultram

I did some reading this morning and read that ultram and fenayl can cause a condition called serotonin syndrome,, almost exactly the same symptoms when I tried the patch,, I now know why I got so sick,, its a wonder I didnt die from that little episode,,

I;m going to try and get off the ultram,, I saw the therapist the other day and she was the one that mentioned Serotin syndrome if I mixed cymbalta with ultram,, so I need to quit it if I want to take the cymbalta,, which she said is very good at neuropathic pain,, I think the ultram is making things worse anyway,, its making me jerky,, at least I think that is what is doing it,, but who knows at this point

      I am glad that you researched haw the two don't mix. I was fortunate when the Rheumy  switched me to tramadol (ultram) the pharmacy  made me stop the flexeril for muscle spasms I frequently get. My neuro  (the one that moved to Philly) was going to put me on Cymbalta if the ins. didn't approve the IvIg. I hope it works for you. I can't imagine how beyond uncomfortable you must be.  Also glad that you discovered overstock. A friend told me about it last year. They have great stuff.  Good shopping is slim pickings in this neck of woods unless you travel 90+ minutes to areas with larger shopping centers. Again you are in my prayers.

I too find that ultram has good effects on my pain, however, i did not know until a few weeks ago that ultram with celexa or cymbalta (and others) can give us Serotonin Syndrome.  I was taking 25mg of ultram this summer along with 60 mg of Celexa .  Yet I felt like crap and did not sleep well.

When my Rheumy learned this he cautioned me to go off the ultram.  I'm still having a great deal of pain, but any thing other than tylenol makes me dizzy, foggy.  So I go with out so I can teach 3 days a week.

The ankle, foot and leg pain are scaring me because they keep getting worse.  I can't take lyrica or neurontin due to side effect of swelling.

This drug thing is a real balancing act, isnt' it?

In this day and age and with all our chronic and acute conditions we really have to watch what we take. Don't count on the docs always knowing what drugs interact with what. They don't have that much education in drugs and only learn more by looking up and listening to what patients tell them.

Sooo, we must ask the doc, check with the pharmacist and check online. I always am very careful what I believe when I read things online. drugs.com usually pretty good, but it helps to have someone who can interpret what has been read.

In the nursing profession it is almost a given that all drugs will cause dizziness, nausea, chest pain or heart palpitations, shortness of breath, depression, insomnia, you know the drill. The list goes on and on and when we take the internet as the final word it can really screw us up with our information. The internet is a good guide and really helps us to be able to talk more intelligently with our pharmacist. Irish

Fentanyl patches are very dangerous unless the pain is unbearable. Like a acute fracture. Unless you're dying, use only short-term. I consider Ultram Er 300mg. a daily a miracle drug. It reduced my use of hydrocodone 7.5/500 to only prn for breakthru pain. I'm also on Cybalta 60mg twice a day. Many drugs can cause Serotonin Syndrome. It is the cumulative effect of drugs that either increase the amount of Serotonin the brain or inhibit it's re uptake. Then total amount becomes to high, Know the signs & symptoms and call M.D.  immediately or go to the E.R.   Happier Days, Marycr

I'll have to look up fentanyl.

I can't take the usual good pain meds cause they make me itch uncontrollably.

And tramadol stopped working for me after about 8 or 9 years.   Good thing I was stopping it about the same time I switched to Cymbalta.

I had something for pain in the hospital in June, but it created a rebound pain when it wore off.   I can't remember what it was.  Oh it was Dilaudid.

It is difficult not having something for pain, that isn't worse than the pain.

  My doctor knows about the possibility of seratonin syndrome with the Cymbalta 60mg. daily, and the Ultram 50mg. three times a day, but he lets me take the both anyway and I have not had any problems with this in the last year that I have been on them.   Lesley

I'm on Tramadol 300mg once a day, I'm also taking Plaquenil for the Sjogren's Syndrome, Gabapentin for the Fibro & Wellbutrin for depression. I still have to take Tylenol Arthritis Pain Formula usually for bed as it helps my hip pain that starts up usually through the night. Everything seems to be in harmony with each other.
