Some Antibiotics Make You Sick?

I just lately had a "bout" where one antibiotic gave me diarreaha. Then I got put on the Z-Pac which gave me bad bad stomach cramps 2 hrs after taking it. My gp told me to get amphagel? which pharmacy didn't have but gave me something else that took care of the cramps. Hey at 11pm at nite - I will take anything to make it go away!

I then saw my own dr the next day who said I got the wrong medicines all the way around espec from the InstaCare I have been going to for yrs. I shouldn't have been on the 1st 2 antibitoics and the otc med wasn't helping.  ::) >:(
Soooo, now I am off all antibiotics for a least a couple weeks until my stomach settles down (Finally today had a good normal meal after 6 days that stayed down.).

I just wonder if any of you got prescribed medicine(s) that knocked you for a loop or made things worse? My friends think is it rare that it happened to me as it has never happened to them.   Thanks!

Hi Piesces,

Oh yes, it's always seemed that I have a harder time with meds than anyone else in my family (it figures).  I'm only allergic to one class of meds, but hypersensitive to three others (including antibiotics, egads).  It doesn't matter what antibiotic that they give me, I always have an issue with it in a day or two, always.

I'm glad to hear that you're off of all the meds for a while, and I sure hope that the doctor will find some that will help you soon.

I'm also glad to hear that your stomach is finally settling down a bit for you to keep things down.

Take care of yourself lady and I hope that you feel better soon.

Take care -

antibiotics always upset my stomach.

actually most medicines do.

i didn't think it was odd because it seems like every med's side effects lists stomach upset or something GI related.

Z-pak was one of the medications I took that kicked off all my health problems.

I was on it for five days.  Every day, a half hour after I took my pill (as instructed), I had massive bouts of green diarrhea.  (Gross, I know, but green diarrhea means large amounts of bile, which means what I was eating wasn't in my system long enough to be digested.  Sorry for the TMI.)

I have a doctor that hates prescribing Z-pak, since he said he's had so many patients with problems because of it.

It's like taking 30 doses of antibiotics, so it will take a while for your digestion to regulate itself again.  You may want to ask about probiotics to help it along.

Z-pak and all antibiotics in that class are known for screwing up your intestines, even when compared to other antibiotics.

Nasty stuff.  I'll never take it again.

I have been on so many antibiotic series the last 40 years that I know it well over 100 as I kept track for a few years and it was 50 at that time. I am amazed that my gut doesn't get more upset but so thankful.

I usually take yogurt when I am on antibiotics just to keep ahead of the game and just learned something. I forgot to start the yogurt the last when I was on the Z-pack and started having the cramping and subtle reminders so bought yogurt. Only this time I bought the "Greek Yogut" in the green and white carton. It is expensive but it is more like the old time yogurt and you can tell it is loaded with live "bugs". I ate about 8 ounces theday I got it and the next morning my gut was so much better. This yogurt is so good with strawberries and it is really good on ice cream with choc syrup. I know, sounds weird but it is just yummy. Irish ;D

I am allergic to every antibiotic that I have ever taken.  I break out in a rash from head to toe and itch like crazy.  Once, I had pink eye and got sulfa drops.  The next morning my eyes were swollen shut and I looked like I had been beaten.  I dread getting sick because of this.

Hi  :)

I was given sulphonomide when I was a kid, probably for an ear infection or strep throat. (I can't remember) Anyway - it made nme throw up like I've seldom thrown up since. The wretching was so violent that I hit my head really hard on the toilet and ended up with a lump0 and a bruise and a headache.

Erithromycin makes me sick too - and gives me stomach cramps. My daughter was given it intavenously once, when she developed a rash from penicillin. She also got stomach cramps and threw up yellow froth. They told me that wasn't an allergy - just an unpleasant side effect. As she was heading for septicaemia it was imp0ortant she kept going with it but I felt so sorry for her. She was only six and she asked me if I'd just let her die. She said if I loved her - I would. To this day (and she's 23 now) she says i don't really love her because I didn't let her die!

Flagyl can be pretty vicious too. Takes at least 2 weeks to clear the system and if any alcohol is consumed within that 2 week period - one will be SICK.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Back a few years ago when I had SJS and was sick, but didn't know with what, I was given Z-Pak for something.  I don't remember now.  About two weeks after I was done taking it, I got really sick and one part of the sickness was horrible thrush and from then on, I tell drs I'm allergic to Z-pak and E-mycin.  They ask why and what does it do?  I just say it makes me very sick.  I never have to take antibiotics though so I'm good on that.  The Z-pak was awful and I'm not even positive that was it that made me sick.  Lucy

flagyl is the devil.  i refuse it everytime.

give me an alternative.  my body cannot handle it.

Patze

I'm with you Malditogrillo, I hate flagyl with a passion and refuse to touch the mess (had a couple of fights with doctors that still try to prescribe it for me).

The last time I took it, my stomach about turned it's self inside out, and never again.

Again,, why take antibiotics when they dont know what thre giving them for,, cultures need to be taken,, not antibiotics,, we are not meant to take antibiotics just for the sake of taking them,,, unless he or she is 100% sure of what you have, (and they possibly cant),, dont take them,,

I had a staph infection at the end of last year.  I went to the ER about it and they gave me Bactrim.  Within days, I had terrible pain in my knees.  Then my other joints started to ache terribly.  Horrible muscle pain.  I stopped it, and within 24 hours I felt so much better.  I went to my GP and he gave my doxycycline, which I had no side effects to.

My sister is allergic to penicillin - has been since she was a little girl.

exactamente.

i never take them when they are pushed on me UNLESS some culture was done.  the one time i took them anyway, i had an allergic reaction...during a hurricane...

It seems that everyone I know that has an AI disease, has trouble taking medication, but particularly antibiotics.  I am scared to death any time the doctors want to give me something new, because I've had so many adverse reactions..  the worst one being toxic shock from Bactrim.  I really thought I was a goner that time.
There are only 2 antibiotics they can give me to take at home. They still cause me stomach upset and a feeling of being detached from the world, but it's just something I have to put up with.  It's better than pneumonia.

The doc told me if my lungs don't clear up this time, there are no other choices to give me without sticking me in the hospital and closely monitoring me with IV antibiotics.    :-[

Ihave been prescribed Cipro and Flagyl for UTIs, both of which made me vomit horribly, but no other signs of intolerance/allergic reaction.

I had a UTI in August and was prescibed Macrobid.  Two days after finishing the meds, I broke out in a rash starting behind the knees and eventually covering my entire body, save the face.  I was given a blister pack of Medrol, with no relief.  I couldn't take the itching any longer and went to ER last night and got an injection of Benadryl and Solumedrol in the hiney.  The Benadryl made me tired pretty quickly, but wore off just as quickly.  I got a refill of the Medrol today and hoping that it'll get me over the hump. The ER doc also gave me hydroxyzine for the itchiness.  I pray the rash is gone soon.  I don't want to show up for my Dad's funeral looking like I do :(
Oh the joy of AI disease...
