Sun Sensitivity

I am planning a trip to Hawaii and wondered if anyone here has any suggestions other than sunscreen, a hat and long sleeves to deal with the sun.  I am very sun sensitive, but want to do a lot of sight seeing outdoors.  I am not a big beach, swim, sun worshipper so that is not an issue, but will be outside being "tourist" a lot of the time.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Boy I envy you going to Hawaii.  I had a chance to go once, but was to ill at the time. :-\

You have some good ideas there with the sunscreen, big hat and long sleeves.  Don't forget your water and hard candies.  Also a good pair of sunglasses, plus your eyedrops.

Have a great time, I hope Sjs doesn't mess it up for you.

Nancy,

I'm a bit green with envy as well :D  There are lots of places online I've found that sell special sun protective clothing that don't allow UV to penetrate them.  You might want to look into that.  PM me if you interested in specific sites I've found...

Have a great time!

I hope you have a wonderful trip. The one thing I would add is anti-histamine to help prevent the prickly heat.

have a wonderful trip. I have heard of some people with AI's and sun sensitivity wearing those cooling packs around their neck to keep them cool.

I just purchased a product called Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad.  My mom got one to wear when she plays golf.  A lady had one at a tournament recently.  I got mine to wear here at the house when I have my "hot spells."  And boy does it cool me down.  I keep it moist and in a zip loc bag and put it around my neck when needed.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.  They were great.  the umbrella and Chilly pad/cool packs I will definately do.  I did a search on the sun protective clothing but I am leaving next week and am afraid I probably wouldn't get anything in time.  I did hear there is a product you can wash your clothes in that adds sun protection to regular clothes, I am trying to find out the name and where to get it, will let you know if I find it.  I can't take anti histamines because they dry me out too much, hopefully I won't need anything.  Pooh, I am glad you mentioned the water, I am bringing my own water bottle to carry so I will always have it with me.

I am getting more excited each day, I have never been to Hawaii and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I couldn't pass up.  Plus my health has been improving steadily so hopefully it will be a wonderful trip without any incidents!  I leave a week from tomorrow and will be gone until the 18th. Wish I could stow my friends away in my luggage, but with the extra luggage charges they have now, I don't think I could afford it.

Practicing my Hula right now!  LOL

Hi Nancy,

RIT makes a Sun Guard product that you use when you wash your clothes.  Hope that helps.

Hi Nancy,

My sister gave me a fabulous big hat for my birthday that has UV protection.  She got it at TJ Maxx, so if you have one nearby I would look there (or Marshall's, they tend to carry a lot of the same stuff).  I know LL Bean sells some UV items too, so it might be worth a look to see if you could get it shipped to you before you leave.
