thyroid FNA

Hi all,

Just wanted to gripe for a minute.   

The middle to the end of Feb, I found a nodule on my thyroid...Well after being referred twice, and having to wait a month to see an endrocrinologist, they finally did a biopsy today.  They do numb the area, but she said it wasn't going to hurt.  It did...It really really really hurt...did I say that it hurt?  Oh man did it hurt...I almost bit my lip off and broke my own fingers.  I can tolerate a lot of pain, but this hurt....I'm back at work, and it still hurts...

Anyway, I started to measure my neck a month ago, and it grew 3/8" in one month.  The nodule is on the right side of my neck, and my neck is really swollen.  I'm supposed to hear something about it early next week.

When I had mine done, it really wasn't bad.  i wouldn't even call it uncomfortable.  However, my neighbor said that hers was extremely painful.  Her tumor was huge...mine wasn't too bad. Maybe size does matter.

Did both of you have a tumor?  Or just a nodule?  What did they do for you?

When I had mine done, it wasn't too bad.  But by the time I had it done, I was in so much pain every single day that a little more didn't make much difference.  And like MusicGuy, my nodules have never been large.

I sure hope that you feel better soon!

G, Had an ultrasound about five months ago and was told there was a small nodule on my thyroid and it would have to be monitored.  How did you feel yours and where?  My submandibular glands stay enlarged and I don't know where to check for thyroid.  Roxanne

I could be wrong but I think some consider a nodule a tumor.  mine may have been 3.5X5cm (trying to recall).  i watched mine not grow for a year or so.  I had a blood clot right before they found the thyroid issue and they couldn't explain why i would have the clot.  my GP was fearful that i had some cancer lurking somewhere because some research shows that middle-age guys with unexplained blood clots often have a cancer arise a little later.  After the sjorgren's diagnosis last year, i just figured i'd get half the thyroid removed and rule out that risk.  Turns out that i had 'minute carcinoma'  nothing to worry about.

my neghbors was huge and she had to have it removed.

I have nine nodule's on my thyroid as of 6 months ago. I had needle biopsy but everything was normal no benign. Nodules are different then tumors and very rare do they turn out to be cancerous according to my Endocrinologist. Was on low dose of thyroid meds to control growth. The largest is 1cm. I had 5 needle biopsy's all of which were negative for cancer. I hope this help put you at ease.

I felt mine on the right side of my neck, where my adams apple would be (if  I were a man).  It felt like something was stuck in my throat for a week or so before i noticed the lump.  Mine is big, you can see it sticking out of my neck and my neck is swollen too.  The gland on the right side of my neck, just below my chin is also swollen and sore.  It's also grown in the last 2 months...The last month, my neck grew 3/8"

Is your neck swollen?  Or do you feel the lump?  I've read that smaller nodules are just watched by the endrocrinologist.  Something like 50% of the population has nodules on their thyroids but are small and don't grow.

Wow...Mine is growing...at a pretty good clip too.  The Endo thought it was full of fluid until she got a look at it with the camera.  She thought she could shrink it by draining, but there wasn't that much fluid in it.  There was only one nodule as she drew from it 3 times. 

Februrary it was slightly noticable visually, now it's really noticeable :-)

When I developed Hashimoto's thyroiditis I felt like I was coming down with the flu and then a lump - like the one in your picture - appeared on one side of my neck only. A few weeks later it sort of shrunk down a bit but was still visible but then a lump appeared at the other side of the front iof my neck. I never had an FNA. I just had an ultrasound.

From what I've read, most people with Hashi's have what's called a 'diffuse goitre'.

I was dxd with a multinodular goitre and was told that nodiules would swell and subside and new ones would form and change shape.

Once I was on thyroid meds the lumps shrank back. If I tip my head back so my neck is stretched I can push one side of one and the other sort of pushes out - but they are not visible like they were.

Isn't that a weird feeling?  I can move mine around and it's so strange.  

I also had a multinodular goiter, and the blood work keeps coming back negative.  Had to have the needle biopsy anyway because the nodules keep growing and multiplying (and disappearing) and the cycle keeps repeating (the goiter has shrunk back to a normal size) even on Levoxyl.  There is no rhyme or reason to it, and three endo's have not been able to explain it.
