Blood disorders

Hi

My mum has been visiting relatives this week and she tells me my BIL has been diagnosed with a blood disorders called necro...? Does anyone have any ideas as to what this can be?

Necro?  I've not heard of that one either.  Maybe someone will come by and be able to give you some more information on it.

I'm not a medic, so I could have this wrong. I just went 'googling' and the nearest I could come up with is 'necrotising faciitis', which is what the papers call the 'flesh eating' disease.
It can be fatal but is not in the majority of cases. It is treatable.

It may not even be that.

necro is the FIRST part of many diseases. it means destructive. you would have to have the ending to know what disorder she was talking about.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your input. Mum could only remember necro, but having looked at the informtion Pooh gave, I think it is probably either leuopenia or neutropenia. He has had it a number of years - initially it was thought to be leukemia and he was very ill. However, I get the impression that it comes and goes. He holds downa job and is also a coastguard, so it can't affect him all the time.

Kathy, I was just ready to post and ask you if she might have said neutro, not necro, and you answered before I asked! Neutropenia means a low count, neutrophilia means increased count. Many people, once they get past the initial illness of some forms of leukemia, live fairly normal lives, with chronic leukemia, or some form of altered white blood cell count.
