Hi I am new here :-)  From the UK. Just been diagnosed after severe dry mouth and dry eyes and repeated oral thrush and thrush in throat infections since last March.

I had 2 teeth out last November and all went well for 3 weeks. At my check up the dentist did x rays and made a hole in my gum where the tooth had been taken out. Within a few days I had severe facial pain from the upper back gum going up towards my eye and ear. After seeing an oral surgeon fearing osteomyelitis, as the swelling internal was severe and over the last 3 months the pain continued to increase. Oral surgeon found nothing.

The day after the dentist made a hole in my gum, I had a positive swab result for oral thrush. Process of elimination, I asked my doc if it could be thrush in my face tissues. She said it could be but it was extremely rare! I started on Itraconazole 400 MG's daily and after 6 days the pain I had for 4 months went!! I was so happy. This is my third week of treatment and the swelling is very slowly going down.

Has anyone else suffered from thrush in weird places? I have never heard of it in your tissues. Take care all :-)

Hi Stormlover  :)

Welcome to Sjogren's world.

I got granular thrush down my throat once. Had a rough throat for weeks and breathing difficulties and that is what it turned out to be.

I've certainly read in here about people with thrush coated tongues.

Sorry you have SjS but glad you found this site. (I'm in the UK too)

Hope you find the site useful.

Take care - Scottie  :)

Thank you so much Scottie :-)

This might not have been a true yeast infection as in thrush, but it could have been a bug in the same family that responded to the medication. It sounded like a bug that isolated itself down deep. It really doesn't matter at this point as at least the medication helped. Much better what you went through than to have a full blown osteomyelitis which is extremely hard to cure. Irish

Yes very true Irish, thank you.

Hello stormlover - welcome to the forum.

Sorry to hear you had such severe pain but that the medication they finally gave you has helped.

I have had oral thrush once and was given nystatin swish by the dentist - worked wonders.

Hoping you continue to feel better.

Sending positive thoughts your way.

Hi Alison,

Welcome!

I am glad that your thrush cleared up. That sounds awful!

I was recently treated for thrush by my rheumatologist for a bald spot on my tongue. The treatment did not seem to change it. I think that perhaps it is geographic tongue. That is my only experience.

Take care,

Thank you both for your welcomes and replies :-)  I have had a full 13 months of heck with thrush growing all over! It seems to be very hard to treat in me. Wish it would leave me alone.

Just wanted to share some useful information for those combating thrush:

- Get tested for vitamin / immune deficiency.  I have had recurring thrush since onset of auto-immune disease... part of it is that, often times, folks with Sjogrens are Vitamin deficient (Vitamin D in my case, which is an immune deficiency that can contribute to thrush... go figure).

Things that have helped me:
- Hydrogen Peroxide (1:2 mixture with water).  Very effective rinse that tones down thrush build up within the same day.
- Supplements (Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Vitamin B12)
- Clotrimazole (Mycelex) Lozenges - Anti-Fungal.
- Nystatin rinse/troche - Anti-Fungal.

Welcome, Stormlover,

I developed thrush for the first time last year, at age 75.  It seems, for me, to be part of the Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth problem I developed about that time.

I continue to have a low level of thrush.  I took Nystatin to treat it the first time, and it helped. But the low level of thrush is pretty much constant.

I use a tooth paste with peroxide, and brush my tongue carefully.

I just put up with it, I guess.

Since I have rather a lot going on right now, the thrush isn't at the top of my list.

But I know how upsetting it is.
