Thrush, Treatment?

Dearest Sjogren's Angels,

I've been using peroxide on my thrush (it's yellow, ack, AND tastes bad). 

I gargle and rinse with it, and brush my tongue with it.

What else should I be doing? 

I'm so tired of this.

Hi Elaine,

I am not sure what to tell you, but in the past when I was still working a doctor I had prescribed a (miracle mouth wash). It was combined by the pharmacist with like a mild steroid, something for thrush and something else. It helped me so much. I need it badly now, but my insurance now won't pay for it. I didn't know I could swish with peroxide.

There is a prescription called Nystatin that you swish in your mouth that my dentist gives me when I get thrush.  It works pretty fast and gives relief.

If all else fails, ask for a script for Oravig.... It's rather yucky, but it worked in ONE DAY for me. It's a tablet that sticks to your gums.

People with immune and autoimmune disorders are at high risk for yeast infections. I have a standing order for Nystatin at the drug store and I get it in a pint bottle. The script says 2 tsp 5 times a day but I never take that much because the less meds I can take the happier I am. I do take a tsp or so a couple of times a day a lot of times and sometimes ramp it up for a few days.

I always grow yeast in my mouth and throat and if I can keep it to a dull roar I am happy. Just for your info. Irish

I have a script for Clotrimazole 10mg Tablet, disolve in mouth daily,  just for the prevention of Thrush.  The Dr told me that I will always be prone to it because of my lack of saliva and the poor quality of the little saliva that I have.  This won't treat a thrush infection, but it is meant to prevent.

I have also found that a couple of drops of oil of oregano under my tongue will pretty much do the same thing.

I know what you mean about the bad taste in your mouth.  Awful🤢.  Also, I have two metal tongue scrapers that I use twice per day to scrape garbage off my tongue.  If you don't have much saliva, it is hard to keep your mouth free of gunk.

I also use dilute hydrogen peroxide once in a while to gargle with.  It also helps to remove stains off my teeth.  Makes them a bit whiter.

Oravig is quite helpful.  I have also used Mycelex tablets and even apple cider vinegar

The GI NP prescribed Nystatin, which I started yesterday.

I will keep all the other suggestions on file for future reference.

We are off to Germany for a week, tomorrow!  So glad the IBS is almost completely under control, and I'm doing something about the thrush.

Gargling with peroxide gave me thrush.  It upset the bacteria in my mouth.  I used nystatin as well to clear it up.

It has been said that hydrogen peroxide use should be not over done as it has been shown to cause cancer. There are times when it is really very useful.  I gargle with it periodically mixed with water. Should not be used full strength or very strong. I could choke a goat!!!

I have a script for Nystatin that can be refilled and renewed as necessary. My Internist ordered nystatin in a pint bottle for me so I don't run out so often. The script read 2 teaspoons 5 times a day but I don't use it every day and not at that amount. I can tell when it ramps up and will use it about 3 times a day and fromm 1 to 1/2 tsp. I don't like to over do the meds. This works well for me and keeps me from seeing the doc all the time. I usually always culture out yeast in my nose and throat. Irish

Irish, sometimes I think if I live long enough, I will be afflicted with every condition there is.  Think a slow motion version of Job.

I was diagnosed and began treatment for a serious immune deficiency when I was 71!  The treatment is IVIG and costs (list) over $20,000 every 4 weeks.  Needless to say my insurance covers it completely, but I would NEVER have expected to have this condition.  I didn't even know it existed before the diagnosis.

I had heard of Thrush, for years and years, but never expected to experience it at 75.  Probably have it because my mouth dryness has gotten much worse in the past 6 months (exactly when the Thrush started).

What a long strange trip it's been.

Sounds like you got good advice here,
however if you want a natural treatment swishing your mouth with oregano oil
can do the trick.

I have chronic thrush. Nystatin suspension has tons of sugar in it..defeats the purpose. I get a nystatin oral powder from the compounding pharmacy and use this. My rheumy writes me a script for it. Insurance doesnt cover, I pay around 70.00 a month, but stretch it out for about 2 months. My other docs said that oral chewable probiotics are good..just watch your sugar intake too.

If if gets bad, have them give you a few diflucan tabs.

I know about the sugar in the Nystatin as I tried to get a sugar free version of Nystatin to no avail. I swore that there was one at one time. Must have been my brain in an alternative universe that thot that.

I just try to keep my dosage down and watch my blood sugars. I do the Diflucan when needed also. The longest I took Diflucan was for 3 weeks. I do hate taking that med for some reason. I have tried the lozenges also but didn't feel that they worked as well. Yeast just comes with the territory and we have to learn to adjust. What else can we do!!!!! Irish
