Health: Mysterious Brain Illness Causes Terrifying Outbursts

Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. It's marked by sudden and dramatic outbursts and obsessive behavior, and it's unusual.

We discovered that he actually had an autoimmune disease attacking his blood and blood vessels, explains Dr. Jennifer Frankovitch.

It was also attacking the brain, triggering psychiatric problems.

I am not sure if this is the same thing that my grandson possibly had/has. He had a strept infection when he was 2 years old ( or so they think) and he developed tics and strange behaviors. Can't remember right now all that occurred, but it was not normal and lasted quite a long time and has come back several times. The strept throat screen was negative, but we have  found out since that he should have had blood work to check for the antibodies.

The thing they have been concerned about is called PANDAS and there is a Pandas website under PANDAS.com or org. This has been under discussion by many doctors and many of them are naysayers. I, for one, believe that this is a very real medical event. This is the same grandson that has celiac and those antibodies can really do a job o a persons body. My neurologist also believes in this disease entity ad stresses that people be vigilant about their kids illnesses.

Makes a person wonder just how much infection is involved in us "old" people autoimmune diseases. Must be some blood work that can be done that hasn't been discovered yet.. irish
