Had foot surgery on 15th

I think I'm glad I didn't know how painful it would be afterwards. I've had fusion of the big toe joint, removal of the joint on 2nd toe with wire sticking out  the end and plaster cast. The first night was terribly painful. I came home the day after with instructions to keep it elevated apart from necessary trips to the bathroom for the first week.

I'm still upstairs as I'm not sure how I would manage the stairs in a hurry if I need the loo. I quite like the peace and quiet and have had a few visitors. Number 2 daughter is home from uni till 28th and is fantastic at keeping up with laundry, shopping and cooking etc.

Just wondered if anyone has had anything similar and can tell me when the pain and swelling will go down? At the moment I manage a couple of minutes then the cast becomes really tight on my toes and stitches start to pull. I go for stitches out on 28th and wires out 4 weeks after that.

Thanks for listening! Ailsa xx

I  would call the doctor ASAP about the cast feeling tight and stitches pulling. It sounds like you might need a new cast, and you can really damage the foot if it is kept in a too-tight cast.

I learned a long time ago for my body to take two pain pills, then one every two hours after that. That keeps the level in your blood pretty stable. I set an alarm clock until I don't need that level of pain control.

Heal well, and quickly! You'll be glad you had it done.

That sounds painful! I bet you are glad you have got past the first two or three days.

It's good that your daughter is looking after you. Make the most of it! Do the things you don't normally get time to do: reading, listening to music, watching films, catching up with your friends here.

Ailsa - I don't have any experience with this - but, I did want to wish you a speedy recovery from your foot surgery.

I'm glad your daughter is home for a bit to help you out.

It wouldn't hurt to give the doctors office a call and tell them your concerns about the tightness, pain and swelling.

Thankyou for your kind thoughts.  I have  been trying to distract myself and have almost completed some patchwork cushions I started in the Olympics!  Although it is still painful, it is really nice to live at a slower pace as I am normally always on the go somewhere or other.  I think it is doing me good as I feel much better and calmer in myself.  xx Ailsa

That's good news Ailsa. Are you expecting to miss much work with your poorly foot?

Hi Kathy - yes, I've been told 6 weeks as I will have the wires poking out my toe till then.  It's also very hard to manage for long on the crutches.  I had to stop methotrexate and abatacept 3 weeks ago and can't go back to them till the healing is well underway, so my RA is starting to play up now, which makes the crutches even worse!

Hope you are doing ok Kathy?  xx Ailsa

That sounds a raw deal, get your foot sorted but then suffer with your RA, not nice. I wish you lived a bit nearer, I would be round to make you a cuppa and share a cake.

I'm doing okay, thanks. Just started a new type of rectal irrigation, which gives me some hope that my pelvic floor will stabilise. Other than the usual fatigue, life is good.

This is the time to read all those books you've promised yourself, or all those DVDs. Enjoy!

Thanks Kathy - I am trying to make the most of rare time at home to relax, read, sew etc.  I had the plaster off and stitches out yesterday - x rays showed it's healing well.  Just got to take it easy till I get the wires out in 4 weeks.

Hope your new treatment is going well and things are improving.  Mmmm, I wish we were neighbours too - what could be better than a similar, cake-loving friend next door!!  Take care, Ailsa

Hi Ailsa

Bet your foot feels more comfortable now, doesn't it? My treatment is going well, thank you

I've been to hospital today with mum. She has had her second cataract done, and is now in residence with my sister overnight. She's almost 80 and has only ever spent one night in hospital - and that was to give birth. She's amazing compared to some of us.

Hugs
