Garage Sale season 2013

WOOHOO . . . . it's here . . . . Garage Sale Season 2013!!   ;D  ;D  ;D  YAY!!

I went to three today, but didn't buy anything from them.  I did, however, buy something from the little girls who had a lemonade / brownie table.  Our son always had a card table at our sales and sold soda, bottled water, candy bars, Halloween popcorn hands, lollipops, ring pops, candy necklaces, etc., and he was always thrilled to get a sale.

The first sale, the little girls were selling lemonade and brownies for 25c each.  I asked the little girl if she wanted to make a deal?  (She was 6 yrs. old, and her sister 5 yrs. old.)  She said, "sure".  So, I said, "Here's a dollar, I will buy two brownies for 50c, and the extra 50c can be split between the two of you, okay?"  She got a big grin and said, "deal!".   ;D  I told her, "when you make a deal, you have to shake hands", so we all shook hands.  LOL  I bet those little girls talked about it for a while after I left.

As much as I love garage sales - and if you've been around these boards for very long, you will know I L-O-V-E a garage sale . . . I'm being more "selective" in what I buy.  A bargain isn't a bargain if you don't need it, or won't use it.

Also, since being gifted with Sjogren's - setting up, sitting out there, and tearing it all down afterwards isn't as fun as it used to be.  It's exhausting to do all that now.  The only reason I do have two sales a year is for the extra money it brings in as it also weeds out unwanted, unused items and brings in some cash.

As always, one of the most important parts of a sale is location, location, location.  We get a lot of traffic at our sales, but, we're out in a rural area nestled among the corn and soybean fields.  Maybe, I'll see if I can set up a sale at a friends house in town this year where there is more traffic, which might translate into more sales.  We'll see.  If nothing else, I will advertise the boys bike and basketball hoop stand on a flier at the bank's community bulletin board to see if we can move those out this year.

Anyone else either been to any sales yet or planning on holding your own sale this year?

Ours haven't really started yet but in 2 weeks the city wide garage sales start in one town and then every week thereafterr for a month there are big city wide garage sales within 30 mile radius. Those are the best. I am anxious to start. There isn't much I need, but it is fun to get out and see people and I can always find paperback books. Irish

Woohoo . . . one of my favorite subdivision sales is this coming Saturday!!   :D

There's a couple sales tomorrow on my way to work . . . I'll have to leave a little early and check 'em out.  It never hurts to just look.   ;)

Yay . . . I fit in a garage sale today!   I only went to one - so, I did good.   :)

For $3 I got two books and a 4-CD set of "Original Oldies - Classic Recordings by the original artists" (with such songs as This Magic Moment, Going Out of My Head, Splish Splash, Soldier Boy, Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Johnny Angel, Big Girls Don't Cry, etc.).

Those are two of the most frequent things I look for at a sale - books and music.  I know the original sticker price on these items are expensive - I love when I only pay 50c - $1.   :D  In fact, the sticker on the one book I bought says $14.96.

Happy saling this weekend if you happen to be out and about and come across a sale (or two . . . or three, or a subdivision sale).   ;)

I was lucky today and when I was out running errands I swung by the subdivision that is having a sale tomorrow.  There were several sales open today.   ;D

My lucky finds of the day:  a Lia Sophia necklace w/slide - $2, a top for me - $1 (and it fits!!!  :) ), a bag of six John Deere die cast toys for kids - $3 (I might resell these in my sale - if I have one - or, if my brother comes for a visit from OH this year, give them to him for his step-grandson), and a single, small die cast farm tractor - 25c.

Toys are another real good re-sale item.  In the past I bought a Tickle Me Elmo for 50c and turned around and sold it for $5 in my sale.

Since I got my garage sale "fix" today (I went to 12 of them), I can sleep in tomorrow morning and forgo going back for the subdivision sale when it will be crowded and challenging to get through the maze of cars and people.

Plus, I got my exercise walking . . . and walking . . . and walking today there at the sales, then tackling half a football field (Walmart) afterwards.

In the PTS days (prior to Sjogren's), it would be nothing for me to hit the garage sale trail on a Friday AND Saturday and go all day.  Those days are gone - but, I can still fit in mini-bursts of garage sale therapy - enough to keep the thrill of the hunt worth it.   ;D

Anybody else gone to any garage sales, tag sales, flea markets, auctions, or whatever it is you call them in your area?

Bucky - who is happy as a clam that garage sale season 2013 is here!!  ;D

Our development's sale is next week. We have tons of stuff to sell, I've come to love having less. Makes the SjS easier to deal with as there is not so much to take care of. That said, I will be shopping for a few items.

Great to see a fun topic discussed. Enjoy everyone!

Some of ours is called yard sales and other garage sales. I love both. That is where I will be doing my shopping when the weather stays pretty.

Bucky I remember all those songs you mentioned. The oldies. They were great.

Have fun!

So too funny, I see a mug that says this girl deserves a party so I buy it. Walking home I realize the girl is pregnant (I'm beyond that stage).  :) Ah well, it's pretty and was only a quarter. I'm a Sjoggie so I do deserve a party

Even though I really, really, really wanted to sleep in this morning - the only morning I have to sleep in, I got up and went to a few sales.  (The early bird gets all the bargains.) My two purchases - a set of two spatula's that my husband likes 50c, and a Lia Sophia necklace I've been watching on Ebay that has been running $15-20 on there - I got it for $2 and it had the tag on it!!   ;D  Yay, me!!

There was a nearby town-wide sale, but I was good and didn't go.

SjoGirl - did you have a sale today too (you had mentioned last week your development sale was this week)?   Enjoy your party!!   ;)

Cassi307

Good for you Bucky! It's always fun to find a bargain. I am not a big yard sale person and I don't see many around here but a few years back I happened to be driving down a busy local street and saw someone with a lot of items laid out front. There was a 4ft Santa that lights up. I remember my father putting a Santa just like that outside our house every Christmas when I was a little girl so I had to have it. Now I put mine out every year just like old times.

Thanks for triggering that memory.

Cassi307 - I'm a sentimental person, and love the things that bring back memories of years gone by.  For instance, my grandmother use to have a 7 ft. silver pom-pom Christmas tree with a color wheel when I was little.  I loved that tree and color wheel.

Once, in my garage sale hunt, I came across a box sitting on a table, all dusty and marked $1.  The description on the box said it was a silver pom pom tree.   :o  #1 - it reminded me of my grandmother's tree (although much smaller at 4 ft), #2 these are collector items and to find one for $1 was a steal!

I was sooooo thrilled with my purchase.  That year for Christmas my parents got me a color wheel for my tree.  Best present I ever got from my parents.  Now, I too was the proud owner of a silver pom pom tree with color wheel - just like grandma.   ;D

I've got a big green tree for Christmas, but I still prefer to use the silver one.  It brings back fond memories.

I could sell it in a heartbeat and make a bunch of money on it . . . but, I will never sell this.

Bucky yes we had a sale as well. Fortunately we did very well and we're living lighter!

I used to love to lie on the floor in the living room after ours was up, and just watch the ceiling change colors. I never found a tree, but I did get a color wheel.
