About 16 years ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Along with the pain I had been having trouble with sleeping in that I would wake up exhausted because I never got any deep sleep. I described it as being in a twilight sleep. My doctor put me on amitryptilene, 25 mg. It took about 2-3 weeks for it to work but when it did I slept great. I am still taking it today. I never had any weight gain with it nor any other side effects. I have had periods when I had to quit taking it when I was going to have surgery and did not go back on it right away. It didn't take long for me to start having sleep problems again. I would hate to have to give it up.

Thanks Karen, by the sounds of it everyone reacts differently, so I am going to continue and see how things pan out. Thanks for replying.

You really need advice from your doctor about if you should continue to try, or discontinue.  It sounds like your concerns are significant enough to give your doctor a call.  Just ask for his nurse and explain the situation, she will talk to the doctor and either get back to you or your doctor will call you back.  Good luck.

Joy, I have been taking it for five or six years, and it has ben a Godsend for me. Initially I was prescribed 10 mgs at bedtime for peripheral neuropathy. It was eventually increased to 25 mgs, and I now usually have a very good night's sleep. I was menopausal also at the time, so sleep was a problem. I also find it helps my IBS pain, so a real winner for me.

Occassionally, I'll have a whacky dream, but that's usually when I'm stressed anyway.

Good luck - for me the benefits definitely outweigh the side-effects - even the dy mouth.
