Poop eating has a medical name, "coprophagia."  Click on the hyperlink below to get the scoop, no pun intended!:

Well...I guess I'll take her back to the vet then. I asked him about that at one of her check ups and he said some dogs just eat poop. She's a real fat Basset Hound, so I figured she was just a glutton with a penchant for poop.

iraisin,

Hope your vet will be more helpful with this next time.  Lynn, that's really good info. for those of us with this "issue."   ;)

As you say, most people don't go around discussing it, but you know US...we discuss anything and everything!  ;) :)

(Good article, lighthouse. Thanks for the "scoop" HA ha

Oh my goodness I NEEDED that laugh!  I swear when I read every one of those posts out loud to my husband (our poop eating shih tzu died last year :'() I was laughing so hard I was crying!  Especially when I read Carebear's post with all the gagging!!!

I really identify with the "catching it as it came out" :o as my shih tzu would stand behind my chocolate lab waiting.  She even got pooped on several times  :-\ in her 'eagerness'.

Man we really do talk about some funny things here, don't we?!

Meld256

Yep, Missy

This thread has gone "beyond the call of duty" I think for humor.  ;D :D  We all need a good laugh, whether it's over something gross or not.  (Sometimes those are the funniest!)

I think we all may have a skewed sense of humor with all we go through. Oh well!!

iraisin

ha! ha! oh yea, Daisy's a sly one. She knows too, that I don't like it. She will turn around, look at me with those Basset eyes and sit...just sit next to a pile. Like she's asking, "mommy please?".

She really is an adorable girl, but I am definitely going to look into vitamin therapy for her. As much of a trip as it is, it really is funny.

Whose poop does she eat?  Anybody's or is she fussy?  Does she eat it raw, fried, boiled, scrambled?

My current dog is a very polite eater, but my last one was so bad with the cat box, that we called the little turds "almond roca".  Bad dog bad dog.

LOL...ooh I didn't think of poached!

Seriously though it's quite normal for dogs to eat poop, gawd knows why but it is.  Then they lick your face the little darlings.

Ingestion of Feces and Foreign Objects in Dogs......
Coprophagia and Pica in Dogs

Pica is a medical issue referring to a dog's craving of a non-food item and the subsequent eating of said item. Coprophagia, meanwhile, is the eating and ingesting of feces.

Generally, neither of these conditions are the result of an underlying disease, however, it can occur. Fortunately, there are treatment options in these types of cases, or behavior modification practices that can be implemented if it is a non-medical issue.

The condition or disease described in this medical article can affect both dogs and cats. If you would like to learn more about how this disease affects cats, please visit this page in the PetMD health library.

I don't think there's a need for a visit to the vet unless the dog seems unwell, it's soooooooooo common for dogs to eat poop, it usually just requires training.

Nancy60

If you google dog or obedience training, you will find some training techniques to discourage poop eating.  I've not had a pet do this, thank goodness, but might be worth looking into for those of you who do.  I don't think I will let anyone's pets lick my face anymore though...ewwww.
